The gist of it is that a lot of people associate “Nirvana” as being an actual place, like heaven or something. When it’s a state of being literally indescribable to our human existence. That is because the goal of reaching nirvana is to escape samsara, the cycle of rebirth. but by escaping the cycle of rebirth means eliminating the journey that soul goes on. This isn’t meant to be cruel, though– it’s not like buddhist’s goal is obliteration. It means that nirvana is an end to existence that we literally can’t comprehend. The actual pali word for “nirvana” means “extinguish, cessation” Where does a flame go when it goes out? that’s nirvana. There’s even a sutta that has the buddha explaining what nirvana is through a lamp. How this relates to my comic though is that tara as a character will have a lot of symbolism involving fire, candles etc. It relates back to her own crisis of meaning and some other character stuff later on.
tldr; nirvana is something we literally can’t comprehend and that’s a little unsettling, at least for tara. and the alterantive to that is samsara, which is basically “this shit never really ends, huh?”
