It had been arranged since they were little. Talia’s firstborn son would marry Lady Shiva’s firstborn daughter. It was written in stone before they were even born.
Damian, being a year older- was quick to deny the marriage. He was about 8 when he first met Y/n, “I won’t marry that girl!” He growled to his mother, “You must, it’s how things are meant to work.” Talia responded sharply.
As the years passed, the two grew to hate each other more and more. “Damian.” Y/n growls as he walks in, his demeanor was gruff- steady, and able. “Mother! I refuse to marry that boy! I am 14, I must be able to decide who I shall marry!” y/n cries out to Shiva.
Damian scoffed, “As if I’d ever want to marry a brat such as yourself!” he growls in response. Y/n bristled, “You’re just as much of a brat as I am.” she argues, “I hate you.” Damian huffed, “Good, because I hate you too!” he sneered back. There was no love behind the two’s words. Every last word had at least an ounce of malicious intent behind it.
It was the same every time the two met. Y/n and Damian would scream at each other, spit insults—neither backing down. Every introductory visit was followed up with a screaming match.
By the time the two had reached 16 years old, their dislike for each other had only grown more and more. Damian was currently getting fitted for a suit for some fancy dinner their mothers were preparing- supposedly they had an announcement to make.
Damian was standing on the small platform in front of a mirror as the tailor measured him. His arms were crossed and he had a scowl on his face, he was definitely not thrilled to be here.
He hated formal events with a passion, preferring the freedom of battle. “This is such a waste of time…” he grumbles, looking down as the tailor measures his pant legs.
Y/n is on the opposite side of the wall, also being fitted for a dress. She’s already scowling at the thought of this dinner, knowing full well what the announcement was going to be.
Once the tailor was finally finished, Damian was allowed to change back into his regular clothes. He did so with a huff, and as soon as he was done he stormed out of the room.
He’d rather wait outside than have to listen to any more of the tailor’s small talk.
As Damian stepped out of the room, he spotted Y/n also abandoning the room. His eyes narrowed and he rolled them in annoyance. “God why’s she everywhere?” he growled lowly to himself.
Later that night, Damian and Y/n were sitting at a table, a white tablecloth draped across it, with fancy hors d’oeuvres placed on it.
Occasionally, Damian and Y/n would spit an insult at one another before returning to their fake happy performance that they were putting on for all the guests.”
As the dreadful dinner continued on, it had finally reached the time of the announcement. Talia and Shiva stood up, both with bright smiles and glasses of champagne in their hands.
“Good evening everyone, thank you for coming!” Talia exclaimed, “We have a very special announcement about your new heirs to the League of Assassins!” Shiva continued, slightly raising her glass higher and higher as she spoke- a clear sign she was drunk.
“Our children will be getting married on their 18th birthdays!” Talia announced, Damian and Y/n were quick to look at each other in shock- that was in 2 years!
Damian’s eyes widened in surprise, this was *not* what he expected. He was expecting something simple, like being forced to attend the same academy or something. But marriage?
His eyes darted to Y/n, who was looking equally as surprised. His fists clenched at his sides, he hated how their lives were being dictated by their parents.
At 17- nearly 2 months until his 18th birthday, Damian makes a choice. He decides to run away to live with his father- whom he’d never met before.
Damian had been thinking about it for months. He couldn’t take it anymore, he couldn’t stand living with Talia and her stupid lessons on assassination. He needed freedom, he needed to get away from this arranged marriage.
It was the middle of the night when he finally decided to run away. He packed a bag with some clothes and weapons, and snuck out of his room through the window. Damian knew Talia would send her assassins after him, but he was a skilled fighter. He could deal with them.
Back in with the league of assassins- Talia was losing her shit. “Where’s my son!” she growled as she paced through the halls; you simply stood there in silence. You had no clue he was going to run.
It was well past midnight when Damian reached Wayne Manor. He was exhausted, but determined. He had made up his mind, he was going to live with his father now. But he had some reservations.
He knew very little about the man, what if he didn’t want him either? Damian pushed those thoughts away, now was not the time for doubting himself.
He took a deep breath and knocked on the front door, waiting for someone to answer. A tall man with dark hair and a broad frame answered the door.
It was the middle of the night, his hair was messy and he looked a wreck. “Can I help you?” his deep voice asked, “Hi..i’m your son” Damian said with a hint of nervousness in his voice.
The man raised an eyebrow, looking Damian up and down. He was a spitting image of Bruce himself, there was no doubt he was his son.
“My son?” Bruce asks skeptically, “And how exactly are you my son?” he questioned, his tone was gruff and stern.Damian shifted nervously, he was not expecting this sort of welcome.
He was hoping his father would recognize him right away, but it seemed that was not the case.
Damian took a deep breath, steeling himself. "My name is Damian Wayne. Talia Al Ghul is my mother.” he explained, his voice steady despite the nerves.
Bruce's eyes widened at the name 'Talia Al Ghul'. He made a mistake years ago by getting her pregnant. He never expected their paths to cross. He looked back down at Damian, his expression softening slightly.
Damian held his ground, waiting nervously for Bruce’s response. Finally, Bruce spoke up. “Come in.” he said, stepping aside to allow Damian inside.
He led the way to the living room, motioning for him to take a seat. Damian obeyed, sitting down on the sofa while Bruce took a seat across from him.
The two sat in silence for a moment, the room was so quiet you could hear a pin drop. Bruce broke the silence first. "So...you're Talia's son." he repeated.
Damian swallowed hard, nodding his head. "Yes, I am." he responded, his voice slightly trembling. He couldn't read his father's expression, he didn't know what was going through Bruce's mind.
Bruce seemed to be deep in thought, his eyes scanning Damian up and down. Finally, he spoke up again. "How old are you?" Bruce asked. “16,” Damian responded quietly. ‘Damn it this really is my child..’ Bruce though to himself,
Bruce’s eyebrows furrowed at the response, “16?” he echoed, clearly surprised. “You look older.” he remarked gruffly, “And why aren’t you with your mother?” he questioned, his tone was tinged with suspicion.
Damian shifted uncomfortably in his seat, avoiding Bruce’s gaze. He knew this was going to be difficult, but he really didn’t want to talk about Talia right now.
Bruce noticed his son's discomfort and leaned forward, his expression softening slightly. "Look, kid...I know this is difficult-" he started, but Damian cut him off.
“Don't call me kid." he snapped, he didn't like being belittled. Bruce raised an eyebrow, clearly taken aback by Damian’s attitude. He chose to ignore it, though. "Then what do I call you?" he asked, crossing his arms.
“Damian.” he responds curtly, “Or, I could call you robin.” Bruce suggests- “Robin?” Damian scoffs, he had heard of the robins before but wearing daisy dukes and running around Gotham like his father’s own puppy wasn’t exactly his idea of fun.
Bruce couldn’t help but crack a small smile at Damian’s response. He could already see the resemblance to himself in the boy’s stubborn attitude.
“You don’t want to be Robin, huh?” he asks, raising an eyebrow once again. Damian shook his head firmly, folding his arms across his chest.
Bruce leaned back in his chair, considering Damian’s expression. He could tell he wasn’t a very social kid, but that could always change. It wouldn’t hurt to try, right?
“Listen- i’m giving you an ultimatum. Either you become robin and live with me to get away from whatever situation is happening with your mother, or you leave.” Bruce replied lowly- Damian didn’t have much of an option.
Damian’s jaw clenched as he listened to Bruce’s ultimatum. He didn’t like being ordered around, but he knew he had little choice. He couldn’t stay with Talia, but he didn’t want to become some silly vigilante in shorts either. He let out a sigh, resigning himself to his fate. “Fine.” he grumbled, looking away from Bruce, “I’ll be your stupid Robin.”
Back with the League Of Assassins- things were a mess. Talia was losing it, Lady Shiva was distraught- convincing everyone around her that “her daughter would never get married!”
Talia was pacing around the League's hideout, seething with anger. She couldn't believe Damian had run away, more over to Bruce of all people.
“We have to get him back!” Talia snapped, she was at her breaking point with the situation. “Why not send y/n?” Ra’s suggests. As the words fell from his mouth, talia looked like he had just threatened her.
Talia spun around to glare at Ra’s, her eyes blazing with fury. “You want me to send Y/n after him?!” she hissed, “Are you out of your mind?!”
Lady Shiva, who had been sitting quietly in the corner, perked up at the suggestion. “Why not?” she chimed in, her worry turning into determination.
“Because, if we send Y/n out, she’ll never come back and then our children will never get married!” Talia growled- “My child will come back, she knows I won’t allow her to be a rebellion.” Shiva snarked- picking at the fact that Damian had run off.
Ra's chuckled darkly at the two women's argument, finding the situation amusing. "You're more alike than you like to admit." he remarked, earning glares from both Talia and Lady Shiva. Despite Talia's protests, Lady Shiva wasn't backing down. "Y/n is a skilled fighter, she can handle herself." she argued, trying to convince Talia.
“It’s not a question if she can fight- it’s a question if she can get Damian back home.” Ra’s interrupted again. There was a silence that interrupted the entire conversation- a doubt that he’d come back at all.
“I can do it.” Y/n’s voice echoed through the silence. “You can?” Talia asked with shock deployed on her face. “Just tell me where to go and I can bring him back- there’s jsut one condition.” she said quietly.
“What is it?” Shiva asked, “We don’t have to be married.” Y/n responded quietly- nervous of what Talia and her mother might say in response.
“Fine.” Talia said softly- “Just bring my boy home.” Talia sighs. There it was. The words she’d been waiting for since Damian left- now she could out her plan into action.
It didn’t take long for her to end up in Gotham, it was dark, cold, and there was this eerie sense of being watched. She brushed it off and kept watching until suddenly, she was shoved into an alleyway.
“What the hell are you doing here?” A voice hissed- it was Damian, you could recognize that voice from anywhere. “the same thing you’re doing.” she growls in response, shoving him off of her.
“What?” he asked confused, “If I take you back home, they won’t make us get married.” she said firmly, laying out the terms and conditions.
Damian was taken off guard by Y/n’s sudden appearance. He hadn’t expected her to come after him this soon, if at all. He stumbled backwards slightly when she shoved him away. He narrowed his eyes at her, “You're here to bring me back?” he sneered, crossing his arms.
Her words made his eyebrows furrow together in confusion. "Wait...they won't make us get married if you return me home?" he asked, his tone was doubtful.
Y/n rolled her eyes at Damian's skepticism. "That's the deal." she replied gruffly. "I wasn't exactly thrilled to get engaged either, you know." she snarked, folding her arms across her chest. Damian couldn't argue with that. He wasn’t thrilled at all to marry her, but he just assumed there was no other way out of it.
"Seriously?" he asked skeptically, still not fully believing her. Y/n let out an exasperated sigh. "Why would I lie about this?" she countered, clearly annoyed with his lack of trust.
Without another word, Damian crashed his lips into hers. She was quick to kiss him back, her hands going to his hair, tugging gently as he moaned against her lips.
“What was that for?” she asked as she pulled back, attempting to catch her breath. “For getting me out of that stupid marriage- I like you but not enough to marry you right now.” he chuckled.
Y/n's heart skipped a beat as Damian suddenly kissed her. She quickly melted into the kiss, tangling her fingers in his hair. When they pulled apart, she was out of breath and a little confused.
Damian's response caught her off guard, and she couldn't help but laugh at his honesty. “Glad to know we're on the same page,” she replied with a smirk. “I like you too, but marriage, not so much.”
Damian chuckled, running a hand through his messy hair. He was glad they agreed. “So…no marriage then?” he confirmed, his eyes locked on Y/n. She shook her head, a small smile on her lips. “No marriage.” she confirmed, before playfully adding, “For now, at least.” She winked at him, hinting at the potential for something in the future.
A blush crept onto Damian's cheeks at her playful remark. He couldn't deny the attraction he felt for her, and the thought of a future together wasn't entirely unappealing.
As the two of them walked through the streets of Gotham, Y/n couldn’t help but glance at him. Had he really just kissed her or was she dreaming?
Truth be told- Y/n had grown to like Damian, she thought he was cute but she was never appreciative of his attitude. The silence was comfortable as the two walked- no tension, no unspoken words nor feelings that would hurt the other- it was calm.
Fast forward 5 years, Y/n and Damian live in a small cozy home with 2 kids- a daughter named Macy and a son named Griffin. They decided that marriage was for them after all.
“And that kids, is how I met your mother.” Damian hummed as he closed a book that he was pretending to read from. Macy had a bright grin on her face but Griffin looked confused.
“Will we have to be in arranged marriages?..” the little boy asked “No! It just so happens that I fell in love with the one I was arranged to marry.” Y/n said softly as she ruffled griffins hair.
