Popular Australian alt folk outfit The Audreys are ushering in the festive season with their new single ‘Hard Candy Christmas’, a hauntingly beautiful reinterpretation of Dolly Parton’s classic from the 1982 film ‘The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas’. Lead vocalist and songwriter Taasha Coates says the single grew out of a monthly band tradition. For several months, The Audreys have been recording reinterpretations of classic torch songs, putting their own melancholic spin on beloved material. As the holiday season approached, they could not resist turning their attention to ‘Hard Candy Christmas’. The shimmering backing vocals at the end of the track were inspired by The Velvet Underground’s ‘Femme Fatale’, while the arrangement keeps Dolly Parton’s spirit at its heart. Produced by Taasha Coates and Ryan Martin John, the single follows the band’s fifth studio album ‘Ruin & Repair’, released in March 2025.
