Rainer’s untriggered status is a sore spot between him and his father. Both Frederik and Ida had seen the accident as somewhat of a blessing; turning at 18 had been a tradition in his mother’s family, and together the three had decided to wait until Rainer had graduated high school to trigger the wolf inside. Neither had listened to Rainer’s story until the full moon had come and gone and no transition had taken place, assuming him to be in denial. Frederik had immediately resumed making plans to trigger Rainer again, but Rainer left town before they came to fruition. He kept in close contact with both parents throughout his years away from Aurora; they seemed to be unavoidable, constantly reaching out with his mother occasionally visiting whatever town he called home, but every conversation with his father seemed to circle back to Aurora and to turning. The two were tied so closely together that Rainer couldn’t bring himself to agree to the transition if it meant returning home to Aurora. Even when he moved back, there was still resistance, although Rainer could no longer pinpoint exactly why he was so hesitant to turn. After all, the town already thought he was a murderer, what was a bit more blood on his hands in the long run.
