As a writer, I felt I learned a lot doing novelizations like X-files: Voltage. It’s really a reverse adaptation. Taking something that’s visual, and distilling it back down into internal imagination. It was great fun and a skill-building exercise.
For writer’s out there, I would suggest it as a skill-building exercise – take a scene from something that you love, and try to turn it into prose. Figure out ways of capturing not just the visuals, but the tone, the rhythm, and the pacing of the scene. Get into the character’s heads, and give them the inner life that can’t be shown on the screen! I guarantee you’ll be a better writer for it! I challenge you to post a single paragraph that you’ve “novelized” from something!
