â... Jack.â Seoras was determined to meet his eyes, as hard as it had been for them so since he arrived. Every time Seoras looked, they thought of of the way theyâd left him with â nothing. An obituary in a newspaper, if anything, when heâd deserved so much more.
Their throat felt tight. Theyâd stared down monsters human and alien without flinching, but looking at the man theyâd â  well. Jackâs opinion meant a lot more to them than some monsterâs.
âI suppose I wanted to ask if â I mean, you came here, I donât know if that means something to you, I canât say enough how much it means to me â but if...â They fidgeted. Theyâd been silently working themself up to this, but now that the moment was here, they couldnât make themself speak sense.
âIf you only came to find the truth. You know it now. The truth. You can go home, if youâd like, if you want to put this all behind you. I wouldnât blame you. But itâs ââ Their voice caught. Itâs lonely, they wanted to say, Iâm lonely. âDeath is isolating even when itâs a sham. I donât expect us to go right back to where we were. If you wanted, though, to try again... Friends. As friends. I donât expect â but I am fond of you still, Jack, even if itâs daft after so much time.â
