Pride of the Navy
The pirate captain stalked a slow circle around James, boots thudding on the soaked planks as the cutter rocked under the weight of the boarding party. Two pistols hung at his hips, a cutlass drawn lazily in one hand.
James stood very straight despite the ropes binding his wrists behind him, chin lifted, eyes cold and bright. His coat was torn at the shoulder where theyâd grabbed him, but his composure hadnât cracked once.
âCommodore Norrington,â the captain purred, savoring the title. âDidnât expect to see you sailinâ this close to our waters. Brave? Foolish? Hard to tell.â
James didnât blink. âRelease my men and surrender your vessel. That is the only offer Iâm giving you.â
The pirate threw his head back and laughed. A big, rolling, belly-deep laugh that made the men around him grin like jackals.
âOh, heâs got bite,â the captain said, wiping a tear from the corner of his eye. âI like that. Been a long while since we caught someone with a backbone.â
He stepped closerâtoo closeâtilting Jamesâ chin up with the tip of his cutlass.
âBut youâre in no position to demand anything.â
Jamesâ voice dropped to a razorâs edge. âAnd youâre in no position to underestimate me.â
The captain grinned, gold teeth gleaming. âOh, Iâm not underestimatinâ you, Commodore. I know exactly who Iâve got trussed up like a Sunday roast. Thatâs why my employerâll pay handsomely.â
James narrowed his eyes. âEmployer?â
âMm.â The pirate tapped the flat of his blade against Jamesâ cheek, just once. âA man with a grudge. A long, festering one. Said if I ever brought him the pride of the Kingâs Navy, heâd make it worth my trouble.â
James held utterly still. âYouâll regret involving yourself in this.â
âNaw.â The captain shrugged. âMore like Iâll retire in luxury with what heâs payinâ.â
He sheathed the cutlass with a soft click.
âBring the Commodore below. Donât bruise him too much. The man wants him alive.â
Two pirates stepped forward to seize Jamesâ armsârough, eager hands.
James didnât struggle, âYouâre making a grave mistake.â
The captain smirked over his shoulder. âMaybe. But itâll be your grave first.â
He turned toward the second figure still on deckâ âOr ⌠hisâ He tilted his chin toward the deck behind James. Toward Gillette.
A couple of the crew turned, confused. âCaptain? Thought the fancy one wasââ
âAye, he is,â the captain interrupted. âBut even a peacock fights nastier if you grab his mate by the throat.â His smile sharpened. âThis lad goes first. The Commodore behaves⌠or he gets to watch somethinâ break.â
James couldnt help himself when The words were low, commanding, edged with a rare flicker of protective rage.
âDonât touch him!â Now he pulls against the grip of the two men holding him. A nerve touched.
The captainâs grin widened. âThere it is. The tone I was lookinâ for.â
He snapped his fingers.
âBring this one.â
Two pirates advanced toward Gillette, boots thudding on the planks, ropes already in hand.
