Come the fuck on! Is this really the best we can do? I find it very hard to believe Dr Eve L Ewing could shit the bed so hard with this characterisation. I LOVE the concept and I've found the book quite enjoyable, except for the glaring petty jerk that is Scott Summers - which is a big part of the book. His misanthropic attitude and behaviour is within the realm of possibility, I guess, but not to this degree IMO. He's also not an idiot who'd think this dumbass plan would be a good idea. Quentin would absolutely do that by himself, there's no need to have Scott manipulate him into terrorising a school.
Then there's whatever the fuck is going on with him and Emma. It is SO jarring after the communicative, trusting and loving relationship for the entirety of Krakoa to see them sparring venomously like hateful exes. AFAIK this is the first time we've seen them interact since Fall of X; did they become enemies off screen? The contempt looks mutual and irreconcilable, and frankly I need more than that. Just because they're not together doesn't mean they'd stop trusting each other, or do this shit. They're important to each other's lives. Not only that, but all Scott's peers are talking shit about him. Sucks that they were right.
Ewing totally nailed the character work in Exceptional, so what's going on here? I speculate that this is a Brevoortism, trying to force Cyke's square peg into the round hole of pariah. It didn't work very well last time but that's never stopped him recycling something.
