Alice Meets Pimplebottom
Recently I have acquired a book called ‘Children’s Writer’s Notebook’ and let me tell you, it is delightful. It’s full of interesting writing excersises to practice writing like certain children’s authors. I thought it might be fun to type mine out and post them here for you to see.
Write a conversation between a new creature in Wonderland that Alice has just met.
Alice, feeling particularly exhausted by this point, made for herself a little bed out of moss and leaves. Upon laying in it she instantly fell asleep. And oh! What a lovely sleep it was! Dreaming of buttercream pie and tarts, and a great many sweet things.
“I SAID AWAKEN CHILD!” A loud voice jolted her from her dream, and Alice scrambled to her feet. Arms at her sides, and chin raised.
“I am terribly sorry; my name is Alice.” And here she curtsied as steady and as low as she knew how. “I certainly did not mean to fall asleep in the presence of a … oh dear… what would you say you are?”
“What am I?!” Pimplebottom scoffed. “Why I am a baboon of course! And not just any baboon! Oh no! I am the greatest Detective of all time! Isn’t that right Lord Snips?” The crab on his shoulder replied with the usual ‘snip snip’ and Alice blinked twice.
“Oh dear. Why if I only had time to prepare, I-“
“Could have stashed away the Queen’s flamingo?!”
“Yes, precisely- well, wait, no, the Queen’s what?”
“Aha! It was you, then was it?! Trying to be clever by admitting it and throwing me off the track are you?!”
“No- Not at all, I-“
“And look Lord Snips! I see it there hidden beneath her dress!”
“My what?! Now see here Mr. Pimple’s Bottom-“
“Detective Pimplebottom to you.”
“I apologize, Detective Pimplebottom, but the only thing under my dress is me.”
“She’s a sneaky one, Lord Snips. However, I shan’t be fooled! This Alice as she calls herself, isn’t an Alice at all!”
“I’m not?”
“She’s the flamingo in disguise! Reveal yourself heathen!”
“Oh dear.” Said Alice, “I’ve really gone and got myself in to a pickle now, haven’t I?”
