six sentence sunday
(okay so not at all six sentences. from something new, posting this month ♡)
It takes all of ten seconds for Jughead to realize that not reacting to Betty Cooper's touch is a huge mistake.
He knows why he doesn't, obviously; because he's spent the vast majority of his life making it a point not to react to demihumans. Nowadays there are just as many if not more of them in comparison to the human population, so he had to learn early on to be able to stand his ground amongst those with supernatural abilities.
The very first time was when he was six, the day before a full moon. Werewolves are known to be irritable so close to transformation but that doesn't mean they have to be dicks. He was wholly intimidated by the broad shoulders and snarling teeth, but put on a brave face and the kid backed off. It was a lesson well learned for the future.
Most of the time it isn't like that though. Generally it's a demihuman who isn't trying to be asshole—just a vampire no one wants to come near even if they're not interested in sucking anyone's blood, a centaur trying to live in a world designed for people with two legs, or his sister who's self conscious about taking up too much space with her wings. It's the least he can do to not act like they're an imposition, ruining his day just by existing—because they aren't. And now that he's teaching at a school where the primary population is demihumans, he just wants to get off on the right foot.
So when Kevin—Mr. Keller, drama, dryad—introduces him to Betty—Ms. Cooper, British literature, succubus—Jughead offers his hand out like he would for anyone. She looks between his face and his hand for a moment like she's doing calculations, then she reaches out and shakes.
Now, he's met incubi and succubi before in passing but this is the first time he's ever had physical contact with one. He's read enough to be prepared for what's supposed to happen, is bracing himself for it, but he's still not actually ready. The first touch of Betty's hand feels like what he imagines sticking his finger into a light socket would be like, akin to getting struck by lightning.

He rubs a hand across his face, tired, wishing the weather would break already. Rising from the chair, he leaves his room to fetch a fresh tea, but he doesn't get very far.
Coming through the front door is his father and one a coworkers. They have a stretcher carried between them as they head towards the examine room at the back of the house.
