sky licked emerald every cloud
an unseen cow tongue
we slipped through a corpse of trees
everything frozen in white
behind the city stretched
the development like a sin
a forest reduced to the plains
not a valley to be seen
but one hill remained
and we were chocolate-bold
hot with marshmallows
there was a door that wasnโt
a smile pretending to be Aunt Lucile
but was Uncle Jax who no one
left us around alone like something
caged in an unseen zoo
the voice welcomed us
into the hinterland
beautiful like storms
but nothing like rainbows
and some small part of whispered days
had it not been the weekend there were gods
that would have protected us
โSaturn does not care for you,โ she said
understanding โ those eyes always did โ
and there was music further in the beat
matching paces with our hearts and you turned
and one of us said run but we were too far
from the city
from the safety
from the world we knew
and the queen said, โyou need not worryโ
and two others left with our faces
(we did worry but we did not understand
could not understand and we made stories
and poems because she was old and power
but could create nothing of her own)
and one day the way home was gone
and the queen had a shadowed frown
and the stories could no longer save us
everything we see we cannot unsee
somewhere the sky licked
deep brown-grey of pollution
and I would have given anything
to see that again
but we had given too much
to remain here by her side
