things i read in may 🍃 it was so weirdly cold most of this month but i read a lot and that was fun :-) ^_^ fav (singular) in blue
corrections corner (the very first one!)
these burning stars, bethany jacobs — i read this last month and forgot to mention it, weirdly enough :P i liked it! i thought it was really silly and a really good time. the first 100 or so pages were mind-numbingly boring and the worldbuilding is just ridiculous, but if you get over that, it's an entertaining read
books
exit strategy, martha wells — finally back on the murderbot train 💪 this one was good but i'm more excited for the next since it's novel-length and people seem to really like it
the will of the many, james islington — sort of the same situation as these burning stars, but i'm recommending that one and not this. it's not that it's bad per se, it just suffers from a lot of pacing issues and the main character is a horrible mary sue. there's no stakes or tension to anything that happens, which is a fascinating thing to say about a 650 page novel. at least it was entertaining! i read it very quickly and didn't find it boring until the last 100 pages or so
the country will bring us no peace, mattieu simard, trans. pablo strauss — maybe 15 pages in i was like this was written by someone who lives in quebec and lo and behold: i was right! unfortunately it wasn't that good, but it has a great atmosphere. i want to reread it in the original french and see if i like it better that way
house of day, house of night, olga tokarczuk, trans. antonia lloyd-jones — this book has such a cute cover which is why i was disappointed when it SUCKED! that and it won a nobel and i know nobels aren't a great measure of how good a thing is given kissinger won the peace prize but i still had at least a small amount of expectations built up. this book is just entirely middling on every level. retrospectively, i realize it was a total slog. i basically skimmed the last 30 pages. no bueno
the wicked king, holly black — she needs her slop to liiiiveeeee ok now i am being mean it's not slop it is very dear to me. first time rereading in years and i am really happy to report this book is just as good as it was when i was a teen. it's so silly i love it.
a court of thorns and roses, sarah j. maas — i remembered the dramatized audiobook existed and could not help myself. 3.5 rereads into this book i'm wondering when my amusement stops being ironic. i feel like i owe her a 3 star rating by this point. my mind shattered and my bones barked as i read this
