i think in the discussions of leaving the WPBL room to grow in its comparisons to the MLB what’s getting lost here is the context of the solidity and withstanding nature of the MLB and just how long it takes to grow a game.
The MLB has been around for one hundred and twenty three years (123), the last teams they added were twenty eight (28) years ago, teams so solid that they already have world series championships and division pennants. The WPBL in comparison is a league formed just one year ago, with play beginning just this month.
this is not to say that it will take 123 years for the WPBL to grow their game to the level of MLB, i don’t believe that. They have the aid of technology and the passion of a young fanbase that will propel it forward for many years to come. but i think it’s important to keep in mind that growing baseball, like the sport itself, can be a slow and tedious process.
I sincerely hope that the team can expand next year, to six to eight teams preferably. I also hope that they can soon play in their cities. but i think this process may take a bit longer than a lot of us may expect
(now i also think the mlb can completely be a fully integrated mixed gender league however i keep in mind the misogyny and how this post isn’t the place of discussing integrated baseball)
