El metabolismo de la biosfera terrestre se parece al latido del corazón de la naturaleza cuando se ve a través de la lente de una proyección de cartograma cuadriculada. Esta animación de cartograma utiliza observaciones satelitales del espectrorradiómetro de imágenes de resolución moderada (MOD17) de la NASA que puede detectar la Producción primaria bruta (GPP) compuesta acumulativa de la biosfera en tierra. Esta productividad es el 'combustible para la vida' de la naturaleza, ya que nos da una idea de cómo la biosfera está utilizando la energía del sol para apoyar a sus organismos, convirtiendo a las plantas en fábricas de biomasa que sustentan la vida en la cadena alimenticia.
