God imagine being a primitive species on some barely modern world, looking up at the stars with a telescope out at sea, using your civilization's equivalent of Polaris- The north star, as a reference point.
And its just, not there.
Its just gone one night.
-------‐-----------------------
Years pass, then decades, centuries.
Your people are amongst the stars now, Polaris is a distant memory, the echoes of it told in now ancient tales and fictional stories/tropes about the 'Lost star'
You're visting a distant empire, on tour on a space yacht.
As the ship enters a heavily guarded system you see it:
A star, encased, caged to fuel the voracious appetite an interstellar has for energy.
You stare outside the window, at this megalithic structure that strangles the light of a cosmic body.
And as the vessel goes on to the next destination, the next wonder, so does your mind.
And the memory of Polaris dies a little bit more
