Workshop 1 Building an archive
In this class we talked about different ways of archiving. For example Ariella Azoulay who gave new insights by making new sketches of already existing photos and writing a new caption with it.
In class we had to question an idiom from our mother tongue and question it. At first I could not easily come up with an idiom because I already had a topic in my mind and was looking for an idiom which relates to it, kind of looking for the right puzzle piece. Then I came up with the idiom 'hard voor weinig, nooit chagrijnig,' which is an idiom from the Rotterdam dialect. This means that you always work hard while not getting paid a lot, but you still are enjoying your work. It does not tick all the boxes for me yet but I want to do something about (Rotterdam) dialect. During my internship I noticed that many people within an agency come from all over the country but loose their accent when they get in a more professional work environment elsewhere. This made me think about how we don't often see people in our government our CEO's of companies speak in a certain dialect. I am curious about what the reason for this is and what this means for ones identity.
This is also a link to the graduation project I'm currently thinking about. This is about how dialect changes through generations and that all kinds of words and idioms get lost by this and to make people aware in a certain way. Also to show perspectives from people in occupations within society who still use dialect in everyday situations (education, healthcare etc.)
For now there are 3 questions I will be thinking about the coming days.
What is the narrative / assumption you want to investigate and counter?
What possible existing items / materials can you use as the start of your narrative?
What method can you use to counter the archive that suits the narrative and your purpose.
