LESSON 15: FINAL CONSIDERATIONS
STUFF TO KEEP IN MIND FOR WHEN THE TIME COME
IF YOU GET IT, THEN YOU GET IT
No, you should not always negotiate your salary. The point of this course is to know what will make you happy and what you want. You are a service of one, you know your worth and what you want. If you get it, then don’t always negotiate, do not negotiate for the sake of negotiating.
Companies want to sell on your pay so they expect that you negotiate the hiring conditions and packages. So just be prepared and go through the process expecting to get and not get. But because you know your worth and what you can and cannot accept, then it is clear and don’t have to think about it every time.
BEST TIME TO START NEGOTIATION?
It starts only when you get the job offer. If the recruiting manager asked you about your range and a specific number, then they know what you want. Also if you have been offered the job, it means you are the number one person for this job and they want you to be part of their team. They do not want the second or third person down the line.
Once you have the offer, you are in the power seat. You are the chosen one.
INTERNAL POSITIONS
A job for a company you are already working for. Do the same as research the job salary, the responsibilities, etc. Just because it is internal they are not going to give you more, actually they will give you the new job with a slight bump. You have to do the negotiation as with any other job.
CAREER CHANGE
When you go from one industry to another, is that positions and salary estimates chande. There is information on glassdoor about it.
EAGER EMPLOYER NEGOTIATION
An employer really wants you, now what?! It is important to negotiate for what you want but really not beyond. If the company is too enthusiastic putting you on a pedestal it puts way more pressure for you to success. If they give you so much, then you are expected to be made out of gold. And you are not made out of gold but just blood and muscles.
LOWER LEVEL POSITION
If you are moving from a higher paying job to more of an entry level. They may think that you are taking a paycut only for a little while and then move on to another job in just a few months. So make sure you sell them on the other benefits that attract you other than the pay: location, industry, learning, opportunities. And be personal about changing positions: more time for yourself, travel, family and other changes.
NO ANSWER COUNTER OFFER
You did the counter offer and no response. Give them three business days for them to get back to you, no need to jump on then in 24 hours. In three days wanted to check in with you respecting the negotiation. I really want to work for the company and just wanted to see if any of this is available. Just being transparent that there is a little more.
If it is not possible I understand, just wanted to learn if this something to negotiate on based on the company culture.
CARL ALLOWANCE AND MILEAGE REImBURSEMENT
If you are using your car ask for mileage, gas and other reimbursement. Explain why you are looking for these benefits. Some companies have it and others don’t. Just keep track of miles and expenses.
SALARY REQUIREMENTS TOO HIGH?
If you have been getting through interviews and told you are too high when it comes to the salary. If it happens more than once, then you are not well aligned to the realities of the market. Perhaps is the interview and how you can present yourself.
You may have the qualifications but you are not interviewing correcting and giving them the correct information about your career.
