The ever present needle and thread

One of the many things that are a trademark of Madeira island is embroidery. Although my generation grew up knowing about it, most of us never actually took it seriously - it was something grandmothers did. Nowadays, I don’t think I know anyone under 40 that’s doing it professionally or just to pass the time.

As all things of this nature, having a finished piece takes a whole lot of effort from many people (creating a design, transferring it to cloth, ...) . The part of the process that is probably more time consuming is done by bordadeiras: bit by bit, a flat design traced in blue ink is brought to life.

I grew up seeing my mom and my auntie with their thimbles on. Whenever they had them on, they meant business. In between other daily chores, mainly in the after lunch period, they would sit down and focus. Using needle and thread, countless hours would go by until they managed to finish their part and pass it on to the next phase of the process. Thankfully, while eyes and hands are occupied, mouths and ears are ready for small talk. It’s therefore not by chance that groups of women would many times work together.

This meticulous work that provided many (especially women) with an independent income seems to never have gotten as much credit as it should. Here’s to those that were and still are patient enough to take it on.
