Life in the Time of Pandemic 05Sep20
A spectacularly beautiful morning on the Housatonic River. I’m sorry I had to use a clandestine route to get there. The river’s not off limits, but unfortunately the pandemic has caused many public access points to be closed because people were overwhelming them, staying in close contact and leaving trash behind. All I did was traverse part of the closed property to get into the river. And I was rewarded with this beauty, certainly the largest smallmouth bass I’ve caught on a fly rod. What a fight he gave me! Right after I landed him an osprey flew overhead, there wasn’t a cloud in the sky, the sun was reflecting off the water and I felt very grateful to be in that time and place.

I did a video on how to tie an olive wooly bugger, so I wanted to do one on a black wooly bugger. The wooly bugger is a great pattern. Last time I went fishing I caught trout on this pattern. It is a simple fly to tie and very affective. I think that ever fly fisher should have a few of these in their box. It works on trout, bass, and more than I know of. The pattern has been one that my dad talked about even before I started fly fishing. He always said that he caught fish with it. So when I first started fishing it was one of the first fly patterns in my box. I started tying my own after I started tying flies. I made a video and posted to youtube, but you can watch it here. I have listed the supplies that I used below as well. If you are looking for an all around fly pattern that works well the wooly bugger in my opinion is definitely one to add to your collection of flies. Enjoy the video and feel free to comment!

In my first of a series of fly-tying videos I’m calling Thorax Thursday (Catchy Huh?) I’ll be tying a variant of the Wooly Bugger. The Wooly Bugger is a widely used fly for pretty much everything from trout to largemouth bass. It is a fly that should definitely be in every fly-fisherman’s arsenal and every fly-tying enthusiast should try to tie.
