Starting this halfway through because the first 20 minutes I already ranted about the King sisters and that's a controversial can of worms. THE ONLY THING I'LL SAY ON THE TOPIC IS THIS:
Mel and Becca talked on the phone earlier and made it sound as if fireworks together was still a-go. If Becca were able to get UTI treatment at the center, or successfully avoid Mel's questioning... What was the fucking plan for tonight? Have Mel show up to pick Becca up, and tell Mel there "no, I'm going with these strangers you've never met and I've never mentioned once before. Bye!" - and do so in front of staff and families in a likely highly humiliating fashion for Mel? Was she going to last-minute invite Mel along...? Was she going to be gone from the Center by the time Mel got there, leaving with her boyfriend's family, and leave Mel to scramble and have the staff tell her where her sister went? Be so fucking for real. Becca is an adult so I can judge her like one: shit behavior.
McKay is a good doctor for giving street treatment to someone who clearly, DEARLY needs it, and using it as a teaching moment for Ogilvie. Yes, it's on the PTMC's dime and I don't give a FUCK Dr. Robby. Realistically, McKay is working 60-80 hrs a week and making less than a bartender. And she was gone for less than 10 minutes tops. She's doing her job and going above and beyond for it - suck me old man.
Ogilvie readily taking blame for not scanning his patients aorta and missing his life threatening condition to me feels like a mirror (albeit, maybe a weak one, idk) of s1 Santos taking heat off of Mohan when Langdon came in for the MDMA OD patient. Either way, it was a noble and correct thing to do, and I especially kudos him for wanting to go upstairs with his patient.
Eileen Shamsi during surgery is unfortunately pretty hot 🥵😌
Everything about the ICE storyline... I'm glad to report everyone worried about it being handled well can relax, the Pitt remains Woke as Fuck. The fill-in clerk Peters should fuck the way off feeding intel to that agent. I think when Robby cusses the masked agent out, we're supposed to feel tense as viewers that he'll face repercussions for doing so... In the language of escalation/de-escalation, I wonder if Jesse's arrest is in a way meant to punish Robby and the ED for speaking up.
Also: NURSE JESSE I WANT YOUUUU I'LL DO COURT SUPPORT FOR YOU I'LL CALL THE LAWYERS GUILD FOR YOU
They're talking with the mother they're planning on doing an involuntary psych hold on, Robby starts to zone out with watery eyes. Al Hashimi asks the patient "have you ever thought about hurting yourself?", and there's SILENCE and the camera just LINGERS ON ROBBY ✋🚩✋🚩💥💥 I bet he's thinking of Leah
"I would not feel good about riding if I rushed this" y'all I fear Duke is who we (or, more rabbot shippers?) thought Abbot might be for Robby. I fear I do think it's sweet and plausibly romantic to delay his "ride" for Duke (when Robby notably wouldn't for Noelle lmao) FELLAS can my possible lymphatic tumor delay my tinder FwB from killing himself???
I appreciate that Langdon can do a *better* apology than Robby, but that's not saying a ton... It's... Tricky, right? He's not wrong, yelling at Santos is really the only big 1:1 event in their relationship and it's good that he would take it back if he could. I think it's tough that nothing in his apology, or his explanation to Al Hashimi, recognized the role his addiction played: his addiction and defensiveness caused him to lash out, yes, but it also put Santos's prescriptions for patient care into question, put patient care at risk, and especially put tons of stress and responsibility onto Santos to report and stay vigilant about the issue.
I think of the "three people who know," Whitaker is definitely NOT among them. When he says "Langdon? [...] Maybe he's changed," I really think his delivery and body language lead to the idea that Whitaker only knows about Langdon screaming at her on her first day. (Secondhand I heard about an interview where Isa Briones says she doesn't want to let Whitaker be her best friend, because her last best friend died.) And it would make sense - everything that happened during their first day, there's no way Trinity knew Whitaker well enough to spill the beans about the stolen meds, where would the opening be to discuss it particularly when Santos was led to believe Langdon would never come back?
And of course, me nitpicking... The marker of a good apology includes some plan or promise to avoid the regretted behavior ever happening again. Instead, Langdon just leaves it at "I would take it back if I could, but I can't."
Good...? News...? For Langdon AND Santos...? Having a loud argument in a busy hallway where Al Hashimi and at least one nurse clearly heard will do the job of letting everyone know he stole drugs!
okay i was taking a while to write everything so luckily summer got ahead of me wrote up a great zayne history (hizstory if you will) here. but i will amnesty post some of what i had + some other relevant lore :-)
i think its important to start with the kind of player he is because it’s important and informs so much about who he is in my opinion. he is a special player, who plays like ‘no other defence prospect in the world.’ my favourite scouting blurb of all time on him: ‘parekh is a legitimate manipulator. he doesn’t wait for holes to open up in the defensive coverage to make a play; he bends opponents to his will and makes those openings for himself.’ just absolutely nails. he has said it himself that he considers himself to be a ‘new age’ defenceman (i.e. one that contributes offensively; he also acknowledges he’s not being drafted for his size). he was very divisive leading up to the draft on account of concerns around his defence (lackadaisacal without the puck, shied away from physicality), but he was ranked higher than 9th on some lists just because of his offensive upside. it was calgary that took a swing at him.
some pre-nhl history i feel is important:
zayne was selected 19th overall by the saginaw spirit in the 2022 OHL draft, the second first rounder of the spirit the first of which was 2007 born exceptional status michael misa. prior to being selected he played in the GTHL for the markham majors and played against many of the other usual characters (sennecke, dickinson, misa, hage)
he played three years in the OHL for the saginaw spirit. in his second year (his draft year) he scored 96 points as a dman and won the OHL and CHL defender of the year. the spirit would lose to the london knights in the western conference final in six games, who went on to win the OHL championship… which meant the two teams would face off again in the memorial cup, which saginaw was playing in as the host team.
saginaw lost to london in the round-robin stage, then went on to face them in the final. this game is on youtube and is a spectacle. zayne gets headshotted in the first period and draws a major penalty which they score on. the spirit go up 3-0 before the knights tie it up in the third [with 1G-1A by sam dickinson], but the spirit score the go ahead goal with 20 seconds to go and they win it. zayne described winning the memorial cup as the best day of his life, even after the draft.
In his words re: the london knights: they took our hearts away from us/ripped our hearts out so we did the same to them. verbiage he said a couple of times about this that i always found very striking.
also, amid all of this the memorial cup was basically seen as a showcase for zayne and sam, who were both projected to go early in the first round.
he played another year in saginaw after getting drafted, putting up over a hundred points and scoring 30+ goals two seasons in a row (the first dman to do that since bobby orr lol, this was always brought up). he finished second in OHL defenceman of the year voting behind sam dickinson. after losing his playoffs in the first round (which could likely be somewhat attributed to michael misa being injured and out) he was called up to the flames, and he made his NHL debut and scored his first goal april 17th against the LA kings.
other notes
since his draft year he has been called “very misunderstood” both on and off the ice… pre-draft i think it mostly due to nonchalant/disengaged nature (counteracted somewhat by how smart he played). this year however he was described on a pod: “people sense he comes off as defiant due to his comments at world juniors [...] he is not ‘overwhelmed by the moment or the magnitude’, he's there to have fun and play hockey [...] the nature he brings to the rink is different and not as serious as everyone else, which is chalked up to immaturity”
he likes to be the guy keep it very light, will laugh at you when you miss chances and try to cheer you up. maybe keeps it too light?
he wasn’t given an A in saginaw after getting drafted, with the coach saying that they “had to make him earn something.” he was later named an assistant captain after saginaw’s captain was traded, and michael misa was named the new captain.
he is chippy and talks a lot of shit! he was kind of an asshole and a cheapshot artist in the OHL, which unfortunately is something that i love about him. I dont think hes gotten quite there in the nhl yet but there have been fleeting asshole moments which is awesome.. very excited for when he really gets there.
he does love to talk about growing the game :)
he is the youngest of three brothers who all play defence, aydin is the oldest and plays D3 hockey at utica and isa plays D1 hockey at bemidji state. isa has been invited to flames camp, the first time actually happening before zayne was properly drafted so he’s not a total nepo. i have some stuff on isa here :)
shameless self-plug brief explanation of #agendas… i will elaborate upon request
1977/zayne and misa: more details on the history here but they are same OHL draft class friends in saginaw. misa has always seemed to be fairly lowkey on the ice, rarely trying to start stuff, he was the one put out in blowout situations… while zayne was not lol (chippy cheapshot artist etc.) which i just think is a fun dynamic…
1992/zayne and matvei gridin: both 2024 first round selections (zayne 9th, matvei 28th) of the flames. signed their ELC on the same day immediately after the draft at the dev camp, were given their NHL regular jersey numbers at the same time at the beginning of this season. they only played a couple games in october before matvei was sent down to the AHL (he was mostly there at the beginning to fill in for an injury). when zayne came back from world juniors (somewhat injured) he was sent down to the AHL on a conditioning stint while matvei came up to the NHL and they finally they played together again at the beginning of february. after the olympic break both were NHL regulars and so within a couple of months their chemistry became really clear. zayne scored his first goal of the season (which he had waited like 30 games for!) assisted by matvei and when asked about it matvei was like Yeah I hope we play together for 15 years :) they like each other so much
619/zayne and sam dickinson: to be clear i mostly made this up. but some of it is real. aforementioned they were in the same draft class and were the two top OHL defencemen going into the draft so were constantly compared and their teams were rivals during the playoffs in 2024. winning the OHL and CHL dman of the year award in back to back years is something that can be so special. to me they represent two archetypes of the modern defenceman (pure offense vs. mobile strong two-way guy) while one is undersized with high hockey IQ while the other has size and… questionable IQ. and the way this reflects who they are and also just how this manifests on the ice is really interesting to me. and they played against each other in the memorial cup and zayne beat him and they were destined to be paired at the world juniors and ruled the world and then it didnt pan out. and theyre in the same division and sam now gets zayne’s old best friend to himself. so let’s anticipate the flames sharks playoff series in 4-5 years.
1952/zayne and mackenzie weegar: when zayne joined the flames last year weegs was the guy to take zayne under his wing and they were together at the iihf world championships and it was all very cute. and then this year zayne made the team and he kinda sucked and maybe didn’t take things seriously and there was weird body language between them… and then weegs got traded devastatingly and zayne has spoken of how much a mentor he was to him. and now he’s gone for like ever now.

I gotta be honest fam, I am cautiously optimistic about the new Astarion fic coming out. I have no idea how they're gonna work the plot laid out in the synopsis into what we already know about him, unless they have Cazador make Astarion forget everything at the end of it.
