Day 19: Familiars

(For this I used one of my MCs, that I playtest with, to make it a little easier on myself. I hope that is okay. Well I didn’t really go into that much detail with her, but you know... Also I don't mind if you have questions about any of my other stories. Don't don't hesitate to ask me.)

“Liekos, heel,” Alister chides as he tries to pull the great wolf back. Ignoring the expressive emerald eyes glaring back at him. “Don’t look at me like that. You know you’re not supposed to treat her in that manner.” 

Liekos simply huffs before he trots away to lay underneath the large oak tree in the courtyard. Alister’s narrowed gaze following his retreating form. Then, with a sigh, he turns back to meet his girlfriend. An embarrassed flush dusting his cheeks as he sheepishly rubs his neck. “He doesn’t normally react that way, I’m sorry.”

He watches as a bittersweet smile forms on her lips. Her eyes far off as she looks in the general direction of Liekos. “It’s quite alright, my love, I didn’t expect any less.” 

Confusion causes Alister’s brow to furrow. His head tilted like a puppy because of it. “What do you mean?”

Another bittersweet smile flashes across her face before she replies. “He’s your mother’s familiar is he not?” 

Stiffening slightly under the perceived accusation, Alister responded, his eyes flaring slightly. “Yes. Though I don’t see what that has to do with anything.”

Noticing his hard tone she allows her expression to relax. Trying to show him that she meant no ill will with her words. “Don’t you see, my dear? I am a Demon and your mother is a Dracaryean.” she explains, her tone patient and caring. “We’re mortal enemies and Liekos sees me as an invader. Trespassing in her territory. He’s simply protecting what she holds most dear.”

A worried expression creases Alister’s brow at her words. His eyes showed the sadness he was feeling. “I can try talking to my mother for you. Maybe if she talks to Liekos then he’ll treat you better?”

“It would be of no use, my love, what Liekos is feeling is innate. The fact that he backed off by your simple command is astounding in itself.” A wistful smile pulls at full lips as shimmering eyes stare at the mass of fur. “Of course, I do wish I could be a bit closer to him. After all it’s not every day a Demon meets a Dracaryean’s familiar. However, I know that me being here is a privilege. He’s allowing me to be here and that is as close as I’ll ever get to cordialness with him.”

Hanging his head Alister scuffs the tip of his boot against the dirt. His shoulders slumping in defeat because he knew she was right. “It’s not fair though,” he pouts, his large blue eyes shimmering with all of his feelings. “First River doesn’t want anything to do with you, and now Liekos too? They were my constant companions while I was growing up. I hate that you won’t be able to experience their companionship like I have.”

He watches as a warm smile appears on her face. Her movements sleek and graceful as she moves to his stand before him. Her slim hands taking his in her gentle hold. “I understand how disappointing this must be for you, my dear, but I’m happy that I am able to share what little I can with you. I know that your parents adore me, and that is a gift I could have never expected. Especially when in regards to your mother.”

“My mother would never judge you based on your race, you know that,” Alister says, feeling the familiar urge to protect his mother. He would never let anyone bad mouth her, not even the love of his life. 

“I know that now, my love, but you have to understand how scary it was for me to come here. I was not only meeting the Emperor and Empress of Ioria, but also your parents? That alone is horrifying in itself, but the fact that said Empress, and mother, is a Dracaryean? And I was the Demon dating her son?” A small breath escapes between pressed lips before she continues. “It was… it was just a lot to take in at once, but when I saw how amazing they both were? And, how you practically started to glow when you saw them? I knew that no matter what I would always have a family with them. Just like how I knew that I would always find safety in your arms.” 

Dipping his head Alister could feel his blush come back tenfold. “You will always be safe with me, no matter what. I know that with complete certainty within my heart. Just like how I knew the first moment I laid eyes on you that you were the one for me. Just like my father when he first saw my mother.”
