Chapter 1: It Never Troubles the Wolf How Many the Sheep May Be
One long ear twitched. It perked over the furry head, rotating, listening to the forest. Had a twig snapped? A branch cracked? The predator inhaled too loudly, saliva dribbling down their lower lip, pulled to reveal sharp teeth? Or an intuition older than history, carved into the animal’s DNA? The hare couldn’t comprehend such things. It relied purely on its instinct. And took off between two birches, its scut disappearing behind a protruding root.
Lexa cursed and leaped forward. Her dinner was hopping away! She had been so close. Enough to taste its aroma on her tongue. To imagine her canines sinking into the soft flesh, crushing the bones in one hard bite. She would not go to bed hungry!

But nothing beat the rush of adrenaline coursing through her veins, sharpening her senses, turning her green eyes emerald, and elongating her canines. In those moments, Lexa could have taken on the world.
She ran after the hare, her long legs propelling her over the rocks and traitorous roots. Her hair bounced behind her head, held back by a few braids carefully tied together. No wasted gesture, no missed breath. A graceful, beautifully designed predator. Mother Nature’s perfect creation. Until she slammed on the anchors and lost her balance.
“Suck an elf!”
