February 2016 and Winter 2015-15 Weather Stats for Grand Rapids, MI
The weather during the month of February was milder, wetter and cloudier than usual with typical snowfall. The winter season (December, January and February) was also warmer, wetter and cloudier on average but with much less snowfall.
The average temperature during February was 29.5°F, 2.6°F above average, and 16.2°F warmer than last year (13.3°F)! Twenty days were warmer than usual while nine days were cooler. The highest temperature occurred on February 19 with 61°F while the lowest temperature occurred on February 14 with 1°F. The winter season averaged 31.5°F, 4.7°F above average, making it the fifth warmest on record, and 9.4° warmer than last year (22.1°F). All three months posted warmer-than-usual temperatures, including the warmest December on record.
Precipitation was above average last month measuring 2.78”, 0.92” more than usual and 1.61” more than last year (1.17”). There were eleven days with measurable precipitation, which is one day less than usual (12). Winter was above average, totaling 8.26”, 1.81” more than usual and 3.65” more than last winter (4.61”), with all three months posting more precipitation than usual.
Snowfall totaled 14.8” in February, 0.4” less than usual and 4.8” less than last year (19.6”). There were nine days with measureable snow, which is two days less than usual (11). Snowfall for the winter season totaled 38.1”, 19.8” below average, and 5.7” less than last year, with all three months posting lower snow totals, especially December - with its fourth lowest on record.
There was 24.3% of the possible sunshine last month, 9.9% less than usual and 9.4% less than last year (33.7%). There were two clear days, sixteen partly cloudy days, and eleven cloudy days. Sunshine for the winter amounted to 19.2%, 7.0% less than usual - making it the tenth cloudiest on record, and 7.5% less than last year (26.7%).
Thunderstorms were recorded on February 2.

January 2016 Weather Stats for Grand Rapids MI
The weather during the month of January was warmer and cloudier than a typical January while rain and snow were nearly average.
The average temperature during January was 26.0°F, 1.6°F warmer than average and 4.8°F warmer than 2015 (21.2°). Nineteen days were warmer than usual, eleven were cooler and one was considered average. The highest temperature occurred on January 31 with 47°F while the lowest temperature occurred on both January 19 with 2°F.
The average temperature from November 1, 2015 through January 31, 2016 was 36.9°F - the third warmest on record after November 1931-January 1932 (39.2°F) and November 2001-January 2002 (37.0°).
Precipitation was near average last month measuring 2.15”, 0.06” more than usual and 0.28” more than last year (1.87”). There were nineteen days with measurable precipitation, which is three days more than average (16).
Snowfall totaled 20.8” for January, exactly average, but 2.4” less than 2015 (23.2”). There were fifteen days with measurable snow, which is also average (15).
There was 17.4% of the possible sunshine last month, 7.6% less than usual and 1.8% less than last year (19.2%). There were two clear days, five partly cloudy days, and twenty-four cloudy days.
