Chernobyl Disaster
The Chernobyl disaster was a nuclear accident that occured near Pripyat, north of Ukrainian on 26th April 1986. Upon test simulations of an electrical power outage, a safety problem was seen through the operating gap of about one minute for maintaining cooling water circulation until power could be provided from backup generators. This was because it could overheat the nuclear reactor’s core. On the fourth test trial, it was delayed for 10hrs which lead to unstable operating conditions and combined to the reactor design flaws and disabled nuclear reactor systems led to an uncontrolled nuclear chain reaction. As a result, a large explosion ocurred and caused the spread of radioactive debris. Mitigation measures were implemented to stop the spread, by building an enclosure around the nuclear reactor. Despite this, it’s casualties suffer from radiation syndrome and cancers.
The main things to point out from this disaster was
The one minute gap, a safety risk that they tried to reduce by conducting numerous tests with new designs
The inadequately trained personnel (test supervisor) who did not follow procedure which lead to the unstable operating conditions. The automatic shutdown mechanisms were also disabled, going against safety regulations
The struggle to safeguard against hazards immediately after the accident
