↳ Someone to Stay - Vancouver Sleep Clinic
She didn’t live that life anymore, the life of a ‘terrorist’ as the media had portrayed her alias. Taking to the shadows, hiding those and protecting those that might need help in the aftermath of the CHAOS, that had been her new duty. Everyone she had known gone in a second. An abandoned warehouse on the outskirts of the city, where she and her team had once made their plans in, hid away in when the heat was too much, and gathered now a SHELTER for those of her kind lost and needing help. Mostly children with no parents to turn to any longer and were terrified of this new world until she could get them to safety.
It was quiet in the night, only a couple others staying there as the moment and resting in the basement below. Sleep didn’t exactly come EASY for the mutant, not these days. Not when every nerve in her body was ready for the next fallout that must be inevitable. That and the nightmares woke her constantly. Dreams of fires and screams, of watching those she loved turned to DUST and reduced to nothingness. hat was probably worse was the uncertainty of others’ fates.
Those she couldn’t find, those she had no guarantee of being out in the world or gone like all the others. In the immediate aftermath, it had been hard to find loved ones. And after her new role, she had practically given up. People like Kate out there—— or maybe she was gone. They had said it had been random, all those that disappeared in the blip and yet it almost seemed UNFAIR. Unfair when she had blood on her hands and yet those that could actually do some good in the world and had such a bright future were potentially GONE.
Footsteps. Ava stood up from the chair she had been leaning back in against the wall. For a moment, she considered maybe it was one of the kids below but they wouldn’t be so CAUTIOUS and attempting to stay quiet like these were. Her gaze hardened, thankful that at night, most of the rooms were covered in darkness save for strips of moonlight from the windows. She waited, listening, trying to pinpoint what direction they were coming from before her own boots carefully walked across stone floors. Her own footsteps were equally quiet, eyes searching for any sort of shadow that might skitter across in the darkness. Muscles tightened, ready to attack and one hand kept carefully away from her own body.
Someone was there, an intruder that most certainly wasn’t WELCOME. There. A brief glimpse of hair before Ava readied herself. Flames summoned in the palm of her hand, illuminating the room and poised to unleash on the intruder——
Until she saw her face. And then, everything at once STOPPED. Ava’s eyes widened, taking in the familiar sight. Black hair, a soft face, a brow and arrow gripped tight. Once she had thought caught up in the blip and gone a year ago. There was silence before she let out a shuddering breath, her lungs aching as she realised she hadn’t even BREATHED since she recognised that face. One that, like the rest of her team, she thought was lost and only immortalized in pictures. With a year gone between them, wasn’t that fair to believe? ❝ ——Kate. ❞ It came out as a whisper, the shock etched all over her face with mouth partially agape and frozen still. Ava wanted to move forwards, to embrace her but part of her feared that she might just disappear. Whether a fear of the blip again or that all of this was just an imagination, she didn’t know. ❝ I thought—— I thought you were gone. ❞
Heart aching, longing and the flames still carefully carried in her palm to keep away the darkness and shadows that might consume them once more. There she was, perhaps a heaviness in her eyes from the last time she saw her but still there. Still there and ALIVE.
