I love how much of the YA I've read features female main characters, but I am SO tired of every single book dragging its female protagonist into a romance at the expense of the interesting elements of the story. Do you have any recommendations for female-led YA fantasy and/or sci-fi books where there is no romantic subplot?
anon, youāve read my mind ā iām SO for ya books without romance but theyāre pretty hard to find! almost every time my brain comes up with a rec the book ends up being middle grade or a book where there may not be romance in the first book but itās super obvious that itās setting up for a romance in the second
so with that in mind, excuse the fact that this list will probably not be great
The Girl WhoĀ Circumnavigated Fairyland in a Ship of Her Own Making by Catherynne M. Valente ā i know i rec this constantly, i just love the story and the writing and anyway itās a perfectly valid rec here! thereās hints of a ship to come ~in the future~ but the protagonist isnāt dragged into it in this book or the sequel. i havenāt finished the series yet but i think two amazing books with fairies and without romance is a good deal
of course, even though itās YA the protagonist is 12, so weāre still seeing the trend that only young girls can escape the inevitable Love Interest
Six-Gun Snow White byĀ Catherynne M. Valente ā another Valente book but itās definitely for older readers, not on the verge of middle grade like the other book is
i feel like i could sort of rec Empress of a Thousand Skies here because of the two main characters the female main character doesnāt have a love interest. however, the male main character does and itās SO boring and undeveloped and unnecessary that i feel like i canāt bring myself to rec it
if youāre interested in comics thenĀ Star Wars: Princess LeiaĀ is a great one to check out, it takes place between New Hope and Empire Strikes Back so thereās no romance, just Leia saving her people
Nimona by Noelle Stevenson ā one of my favorite graphic novels ever (pshh what iāve totally read lots of graphic novels being my favorite is a huge honor) and no romance for the main character!
weāre getting into middle grade after this because unfortunately i canāt think of any more YA books
The Girl Who Could Fly by Victoria Forester
The Trials of Morrigan Crow by Jessica Townsend ā comes out on Halloween, i read an arc and absolutely loved it
Fever Crumb by Philip Reeve
maybe also check out this list!
as always, more āfantasy or scifi with a female mc and without romanceā recs are very welcome (and needed!)
Games I Recommend #15
The eldritch horror of visiting your parents
I crush (on) the alien
Fairy tale wish of a loveless girl
Wheel of Innocence is a lesbian visual novel where you peer into the life of a disabled high schooler named Reina.
I think Nancy and Jonathan should be in a committed qpr
God I hope Geun Soo gets with Hyun Yi, he's way too good for Yi Seo

Biographies are professional fanfics
Okay so no donāt tell meĀ āSteve and Sharon were together in the comicsā to make the possibility of them getting together in Civil War more acceptable to me.
Because for one thing, I donāt give a shit. Ā It doesnāt make it more healthy, and it doesnāt squick me less that they could put Steve in a romance with his lost loveās NIECE in the same movie they fucking bury her. Ā It doesnāt change the fact that Sharon has had little to no development despite being in the last movie, and literally zero relationship with Steve beyond lying about who she was and Natasha inexplicably telling Steve to call her (donāt even get me started on that).
For two, fuck you. Ā Because comic canon romances clearly have very little bearing in the MCU. Ā Donāt think so? Ā Find me Betty Ross. Ā Or, conversely, find me some comic canon Brutasha.
I donāt hate Sharon. Ā I am all about the inclusion of Sharon Carter to fill out a lopsided line up and inject more bad ass ladies into MCU. Ā But no, not gonna be happy about a romance between her and Steve. Ā Kind of makes me ill actually.
Hi, can you recommend some YA that doesn't have strong themes of romance or where the main character doesn't have a love interest (I'm getting kind of sick of everyone ending up with a boyfriend in the middle of a warzone), thanks!
Hey! In making this list I realized that I havenāt read many Young Adult books without romance- but I have managed to compile this short list:
The Young Elites by Marie Lu
The Looking Glass Wars by Frank BeddorĀ
The Giver by Lois Lowry Ā
Perfect Escape by Jennifer Brown
Hate List by Jennifer Brown
Leverage by Josh C. Cohen (note to reader: contains a rape scene)
Butter by Erin Jade LangeĀ
Code Name Verity by Elizabeth Wein
Maze Runner by James Dashner
All Fall Down by Ally Carter (border line middle grade book)
Kiki Strike: Inside Shadow City by Kirsten Miller
How To Live A Life of Crime by Kirsten Miller (some romance but in my opinion it does not dominate the story)
Enderās Game by Orson Scott CardĀ
also check out these two lists
Hope that helps!
Can anyone else think of some others? Feel free to add on
