Today’s #filmfriday is a savory dark morsel of witchy delight: Gretel and Hansel (2020). I appreciated this movie in so many ways despite its numerous shortcomings. First and foremost, the cinematography is gorgeous and ripe with symbolism. In combination with the soundtrack, it really sets the tone for a movie that dishes out the quintessential dark fairytale atmosphere from beginning to end. Not only are there healthy helpings of Autumn foliage, but most of the scenes are glazed in Halloween color palettes of shadowy brown-blacks paired with luminous yellow-oranges. The whole movie is a feast for the eyes and Holda’s house, especially, is what my witch dreams are made of! I revel in the scenes set in her apothecary and when she shares her knowledge of herbalism and unguents with the young Gretel. Making up for the weak links, Alice Krige gives a wonderful performance as Holda, perfectly portraying her with a thirst for malevolence hidden behind teacherly wisdom and a quirky mystique. Her dialogue contains a lot of great witchy lines, too. I can already tell I’ll be quoting them to friends in the future (friends, this is your first and only warning). But don’t get too excited just yet because this movie definitely has flaws. On a critical note, the film has all the fixings for a masterpiece, and although it is definitely an entertaining watch, it doesn’t seize its full power. There is a strong build-up of momentum but it fizzles out and squanders in the end. Plus, the movie would be a lot stronger without Gretel’s completely distracting and unnecessary narration. The costumes leave a lot to be desired, too. I was put off by young Holda’s modern look that took away from the old-world aesthetic already established. However, I can begrudgingly put aside these imperfections because Gretel and Hansel is a witchy treat that offers a cornucopia of visual inspiration. Despite its disappointments, it still serves up bountiful portions of folkloric style, dark magic, and autumnal ambiance. All in all, the movie is a fun flick and worth at least one watch if only to gorge yourself on its eerie offerings. 🎞 #gretelandhansel #holda #witchmovie https://www.instagram.com/p/CANpx-iJnM1/?igshid=hpoori60rwpg
I want nothing more than to RAVE about my choice for today’s #filmfriday, the 1967 horror classic Viy, and one of my favorite movies! However, this #filmfriday is very special and instead of reading my review, you can LISTEN to it! Recently, I had the pleasure of making a guest appearance on my friends’ podcast @ask.a.hag, where we celebrated the spooky season by discussing our favorite witch movies! Hosted by Alison {@native_apothecary} & Leslie {@juju_pgh}, and produced by Donna Kyler {@d_kyler}, Ask a Hag is a podcast that regularly discusses witchcraft and self healing in the modern world. It is a true resource for any witch, novice to experienced, as well as the curious wonderer, I highly recommend it! I am so excited and honored to be a part of this bonus episode and talk about Viy with two of my favorite witches! It will be released tomorrow (10/19) so be sure to check it out! @ask.a.hag 🎃 #viy #viy1967 #witchmovie https://www.instagram.com/p/B3x1CXypul8/?igshid=6tkjb0a10btg

Anjelica Huston stars in the 1990 The Witches. A boy name Luke goes on a vacation with his grandma and realizes the hotel is full of witches. The make-up and puppet effects were amazing by Jim Henson and his creature team effects. The characters were great and three dimensional, and Angelica Huston nailed her role of playing an evil witch and turning everyone into mice. For a PG movie it can be a real horror film and hell even back then kid movies were very dark and scary and wishing they bring it back. I give it an 9.5/10. . . . . #thewitches #jimhenson #jimhensoncreatureshop #witchmovie #horrorclassic #horror #moviereview #supernatural #thewitchesmovie #witchcraft https://www.instagram.com/p/CGvhVIpFx-a/?igshid=1doo4m9qt18qp
