In every type of industry, not just DJing and mixing, there are always the “workhorses” or the pieces of gear where everybody can attest to the quality of it. For turntables there is no question who receives this rank and recognition. Technics 1200’s, even though they are no longer being produced still hold the title for the best built record players out there. Even after ten years of ownership, the resale value remains the same or even higher. You can’t say that about any other turntable. How about microphones? Hopefully the name Shure pops up into your head, because the SM58 is still regarded as the tank of all microphones out there. However, just because an item holds its position as the toughest or longest lasting – this doesn’t mean that there aren’t any other better alternatives out there. With new technologies coming in all the time, it’s hard to keep an old favorite at the top and so a new challenger will have a closer shot at getting that title. Microphones that were once held back by wires may no longer need to be tethered down.
