My wild guesses are either Adessa (a village elder, smart and cultured, has dealt with Snow in the past) or Brutus (extremely popular, has mentored the most victors). The older victors seem too retired to step back into the spotlight.

ronan does start realizing during the 60s that he's getting older and doesn't have, you know, a leisurely 20 years to choose a successor. he's been planning on devon for his people (manipulation) skills when petra comes along and snow genuinely has a blind spot for her.

Ignoring that the concept doesn’t make much sense, how would the Centre respond to the concept of one or two dozen D2 children fighting each other to the death, just for a place in another arena? How many volunteers would they call for? Just the original two, who would be expected to win easily but at an impossible cost? The entire graduating class? Would the Centre draw as many tributes from Residential as necessary to keep D2s other children safe?

And if your answer is “D2 revolts on the spot”, good for them. :)

I saw this floating around once before and the concept confused me — I assume it’s a quell idea, not every year, as otherwise why? having a class of 24 going in together changes the whole dynamic of the program so much it’s not even recognizable, you can’t have residential exist the way I have it and have those kids go on to kill each other wholesale.

assuming a one year surprise then yeah they’d clean out that year but WOW they’d be unhappy about it. optics would be wild though; you think the contrast in Claudius’ year is bad, imagine 24 volunteers after another

ohh i feel honoured!! :) so idk if i can give you a historically correct answer for this because I am just like a hobby polar historian BUT I think there´s not really a trend in this matter. It depends on the expedition itself. usually noval expeditions have a larger crew because of all the additional seamen and also the navy rules (like the franklin expedition had a crew of 130!) but then again at the same time nansen or amundsen had expeditions with less than 10 men. So it´s always different I think in modern times since the scientific stations are inhabited all year all day it´s even possible for super small crew of 2 people to arrive and just join the team, which would never have been possible like 100 years ago :D
