On reread, i'm flabberghasted how many people were complicit in concealing the abuse Jainan suffered. Of course, Taam hid what he was doing from the public, and he made Jainan complicit in that. God forbid Jainan make a scene or worse, cause a scandal. But the number of Taam's friends and colleagues and aide who were witness at very least to the verbal abuse? And said nothing? Everbody in internal security who was involved in processing Taam's request to revoke Jainan's security clearing, and saw no issue in the fact that Jainan couldn't contact anybody outside the palace, when he's a foreigner whose entire social circle moves outside the palace? How could anybody watch what was happening for 5 years, and not say anything?
i am really impressed at how well winter's orbit took all the Polite Misunderstanding tropes i associate with an arranged marriage/slow burn romance that usually drive me crazy and made them work for me. kiem is trying so hard not to impose as the presumably inferior second choice; jainan's so traumatized by his previous marriage that he can't stop assuming the worst. they both have spent so long being belittled and devalued that it takes weeks of cohabiting before they realize the other sincerely sees something of value in him, and nothing of value in himself.

My Thoughts:
I've had Winter's Orbit on my TBR for a very long time. It's a book that I was so certain I would love that I've been saving it for the exact right moment. After reading Princeweaver recently, I've been craving another good queer SFF with political intrigue, so after years of anticipation, I finally settled in to start it. I was hooked from the very beginning!Â
I loved both main characters in this from very early on. Kiem is sort of the black sheep of the royal family, but he's thoughtful and kind. Jainan is being used as a chess piece in a complicated political situation, so I felt a lot of sympathy for him from the start.Â
The romance is a good slow burn. It takes some time for these two to really get to know and trust each other, but when they do, it is so sweet and fulfilling. I especially loved seeing how they supported each other and helped each other grow. I love when romances are shown to make both characters better, and this is a great example of this done well.Â
The politics and murder mystery are very exciting! It was so difficult for me to put this book down. I've been reading fairly slowly lately, but I flew through this because the plot completely hooked me!Â
Completely unsurprisingly, this was a 5-star read for me and is a new all-time favorite. I'm truly so glad I finally read this, and I'm genuinely looking forward to reading Ocean's Echo as soon as I can!Â
