Australian people who love greenery around the property have multiple options in terms of grasses. The most preferred choice for decades is buffalo grass, i.e. versatile enough to be used in residential and commercial areas. It performs very well in commercial grounds such as golf courses, baseball fields, public playgrounds, parks, etc. The reason is that it is highly resilient to wear and tear and has low maintenance characteristics. 

It comes with an attractive green colour that stays intact even during the harsh winter season. People say that this turf is entirely maintenance-free, but the fact is that it will require some maintenance for sure. 

There are several steps one can take for maintenance, and we will discuss the main ones in this post.

KEEP AN EYE ON THE WEEDS

There might be different stories in the markets around this turf, but the fact is that it is entirely different from couch grass, i.e. known for being very invasive. Couch grass is actually an invasive grass that is also tagged as ‘weed’. Buffalo grass is more likely to be invaded by these weeds, mainly couch grass. They are unsuitable for any grass as they compete with plants for nutrition present in the soil and pull it out faster than the growth there. Hence, it is crucial to be vigilant about weed growth and use different Sydney turf supplies to eliminate them. The most common weed found in buffalo grass is the onion weed, characterised by its thin leaves that arise from the white bulb in the centre. They also have white petals that blossom on the top of a long stalk.

Apart from onion weeds, winter grass and summer grass are also prevalent weeds disturbing the natural growth of buffalo grass. Summer grass, in particular, is more life-threatening, and it can be handpicked very quickly.

UNDERSTAND THE IDEAL FERTILISER RATIO

No matter what grass you decide for your lawn, you will have to get it frequently fertilised to enable faster growth and better health. Buffalo grass also has similar requirements, and in the lack of fertilisers that mostly have nitrogen, Sydney turf supplies will not be able to survive the harsh Australian weather. Without nitrogen, you will find buffalo grass getting infected easily by weeds and, most commonly, by white clover.

Fertiliser application is essential, followed by one more thing, i.e. staying cautious about the amount to use and the frequency of fertiliser application. Over usage of fertiliser on the garden bed can damage and cause severe harm to buffalo grass and, in fact, any other grass. In this regard, vendors of Sydney turf supplies say that you only need about one or two pounds of nitrogen for 1000 square feet of buffalo cross every year. While purchasing fertilisers, don’t forget to determine the nitrogen-to-phosphorus-to-potassium ratio, and it should ideally be 3-1-2 or 4-1-2. Also, it is recommended to use fertilisers that have a minimum of 35% slow-release nitrogen. As mentioned above, you will require 1 pound of nitrogen every year for everyone 1000 square feet in summer.
