My first WinAMP skin
For few months I have been working here and there on my Doom-themed WinAMP skin. I got idea for it while browsing winamp skin museum and noticing that none of the doom skins utilized elements of the HUD from 2 classic games. I thought that it was injustice to not depict such iconic element of the franchice and so with the help of skinning atlas tutorial I set out to work on my own skin. I begun with main window, takinng many elements from HUD and wall textures while also adding some fun touches like scaled-down sprites of Doomguy, cacodemon and rocket in progress bar. I feel like this is best part of my work. Equalizer had me stumped for a bit, but after taking a look at resources extraced from doom I decided to center conept around torture spikes. After bashing two different variants together and placing big spike altar between gain and frequencies it was straightforward to take the rest from elements of hell castles, where these elements appear. After that I had no idea what to do with playlist. It's scalability and text were a challange. After few months I ended up deciding that I should base in on one of the terminal textures, with scrollbar being reused vent texture. Text colors were based on concept art for doom UI back when it had human characters other that protagonist. Then I based visualizer colors on one of the charts on monitors and old gradient for unused font. Lastley I based stacks on folding paper for old dot-matrix printers, which is my most original part in this and what I feel is most weakest. I haven't even tested it fully, as I use audacious to see result of my work and it simply uses context menu widget when clicking stack. Similarly I haven't tested easter-egg mode. At least while I worked on this skin audacious gained ability to display unfocused versions of titlebars. Besides stacks, there is some other liberties I decided to take with this skin. Letters I and S weren't taken from UI like the rest but were bashed from other letters. With "I" I gave it serifs since in my opinion capital i should have serifs in most contexts to distinguish it from simple vertical bar. With "S" I decided to fit it into 5*5 size most other letter occupied. I could rework it to use original S if feedback demands it. With limit of what audacious is capable next I will either polish up stacks or start to make GEN.BMP and GENEX.BMP, both of these demanding genuine article, unless audacious or some other audio player making use of classic winamp skins decides to implement these elements. => gemini://namno.duckdns.org/f/UAC_AMP_DOOM_V1.zip You can download skin here => gemini://namno.duckdns.org/f/Skinner_Atlas.wsz Skinner Atlas that I used to make my skin, so that you don't have to search web archive for it.
