Pretty much. Things I remember learning about in history at school:
Romans
The Tudors
The feudal system
The industrial revolution
World War I
Politics in the Elizabethan era
Salvery, but still in a fairly abstract, ‘long ago’ way. Despite the fact that I lived in Bristol and it was a major port. The entire success of the city was built on slavery.
Gandhi, but again without proper context. Just that India ‘didn’t like being ruled by Britain’. Nothing about the atrocities committed.
It’s not so much that our history is sanitised, it’s just that there’s so much of it, you can easily get away with never mentioning the “bad bits” while still seeming like you’ve covered a lot.
