I actually really loved how they managed to make Kit and Jade a slow burn after having them kiss in episode one. Like, yeah, on one level it’s funny watching them insist they’re just friends when they are clearly, obviously not just, but it’s a real stroke of storytelling genius on another level. Just because these girls have clearly been smitten with each other for ages by the start of the show doesn’t mean they were ready to talk about it openly. Kit dreamed of adventuring, saying to Jade “don’t you dream of getting out there?” But Jade looks only at Kit. She doesn’t dream of going beyond the barrier, only of the girl standing beside her. But Jade can’t see a future where their paths lead anywhere together; Kit is engaged to Graydon, she’ll be Queen, and Jade’s going to be a knight. Any possible relationship is naught but dreams for Kit and Jade in episode one. But dreams sustain us so they hang onto it for as long as possible, never speaking it. Until it’s broken the night of the engagement. The precious bubble of the dream pops. Kit can’t imagine staying, can’t imagine marrying someone she doesn’t know, someone who isn’t Jade. So she goes to say goodbye, and she kisses her, a reckless goodbye kiss with no consequences because she’s leaving and she’s never going to see Jade again. Except that doesn’t happen. The attack happens, and suddenly they’re on a quest together, beyond their rules and roles. They weren’t ready to discuss it before and still aren’t, but the kiss is there, lingering between them, a dancing edge of tension to their friendship. They can try and go back to the way it was when they were just friends and pining after each other, ever longing, but they can’t. They don’t really want to. They want this, they want each other, a life with each other, but they don’t know how to say it, how to start. But watching them grapple with it, with their feelings, and eventually come to speak them to each other in such beautiful scenes, is a joy and a delight

Sorsha watching Jade say “where the princess goes I go” and you just know that Sorsha can see the neon signs above their heads flashing gay gay homosexual gay and just thinking, Yep they’re gonna confess their love to each other on this quest I can see it happening so much for a marriage alliance and then King Hastur can see it too and decides throwing Graydon in there will definitely go well and Jade steps in front of him to prevent him approaching Kit and my god the whole court can see it it is not subtle. I know this is a somber and sad scene putting together a crew to go looking for the kidnapped prince but I love the gayness in this scene so much

I don’t think I will ever be over the fact that there was a whole scene dedicated to Jade just unashamedly checking Kit in armour out. It’s not even an ‘in the background’ thing, it’s the focus of a whole scene. And the way you can see all of the thoughts on her face and so can Kit, the way she preens for Jade, that little self satisfied look? It’s amazing. I’m never gonna be over it

Dying all over again over what a good job Jade and Kit’s introduction scene does at setting up pretty much everything about their characters, arcs and relationships. The choreography, the setting, the acting is all immaculate

So Kit and Jade’s pre series friendship honestly gives me all the vibes of: teachers pet is best friends with the little shithead at the back of the class who doesn’t pay attention to anything and all the adults would say she’s a bad influence except they can’t because the little shithead just happens to be ✨ the princess ✨

Sorsha in the intro explaining how Elora was hidden away and saying “it was the only way I could protect her” but then fading away into Kit training with Jade is like A+ foreshadowing for Kit becoming Elora’s protector and all her training with Jade being preparation for that

Okay actually you wanna know one of my favourite things about the arrogant princeling thing Kit’s got going on? The way they openly acknowledge it, immediately, and use it to help set up her character. Jade playfully calls her out on it and she responds “gotta have that too”. It kind of comes with the station she’s never wanted but grown up with, and it immediately demonstrates intelligence and understanding and certain element of political savvy hiding beneath her teenage/young adult brashness and wildness. Having her openly acknowledge her own arrogance and it’s place in her role sets up so many fascinating things about her character
