First taters of the season! Lifted yesterday by Rosie (@roreilly23) at Roughwood. Duke of York Potato was bred by William Sim of Aberdeenshire in the east of Scotland. Born the year before the great famine, his future work would include attempting to breed disease-resistant potatoes. This one, supposedly a controlled cross of Early Primrose and King Kidney, was his most popular and award-winning creation (though he made no money from its sale). This potato is delicious and while it is not necessarily immune to late blight, it is harvested before much damage can be done! Apparently it is also marketed for fall planting due to its short season. #whitedukeofyork #dukeofyork #dukeofyorkpotatoes #heirloompotatoes #williamsim #thegreatfamine #potatobreeding #roughwoodseedcollection #aberdeenshire
