Post Addendum: Yesterday I discussed pigments and my frustration with a #williamsburgpaint #paintset that wasn’t working for me. I broke the set down to basic pigments to identify potential problems and found that the set heavily leaned toward blues- specifically phthalocyanine and Prussian (highly ‘infectious”). Today I did some research and found that there were additional colors included in the set (which I subsequently found) that would add in the reds and yellows that were missing. The additional colors are Italian Lemon Ochre (Nat Yellow Oxide), Persian Rose (Pyrrol Orange and Quinacridone Violet), and Alizarin Orange (Anthraquinone Red and Azo Yellow). I’ll have to experiment with the set again. The overall lesson is that you can break a set down by the basic pigments within, which are usually printed on the paint tubes. “Custom” colors are a result of combining “basic” pigments. Sets can’t offer the flexibility that can be achieved with a good set of basic colors colors (usually already found in an artists standard stock) but they do offer convenience.
