William Parker pays tribute to Henry Grimes (1935–2020)
Death of William Parker, 4th Baron Monteagle: The Nobleman Linked to the Gunpowder Plot
On July 1, 1622, William Parker, 4th Baron Monteagle, died in England. He is best remembered for his connection to the discovery of the Gunpowder Plot of 1605, a failed conspiracy by Catholic extremists to blow up Parliament and assassinate King James I and the government.
Monteagle became famous after receiving the mysterious Monteagle Letter in October 1605, warning him to avoid attending the opening of Parliament. He brought the letter to the attention of authorities, leading to the search of the cellars beneath the House of Lords and the discovery of Guy Fawkes guarding barrels of gunpowder.
Although some historians have debated Monteagle’s exact motives and whether he knew more about the plot than he revealed, his actions played a major role in preventing the attack. His legacy remains tied to one of the most dramatic political conspiracies in English history.
