Debutante Angelica Schuyler Crosby, who was considered one of New York’s great beauties, is shown in a dramatic pink and white gown, holding flowers and perched on a rustic bench. Crosby was the daughter of Harriet (née Van Rensselaer) Crosby and John Schuyler Crosby, the 5th Governor of the Montana Territory.

After deciding to continue his artistic education abroad, Thorne traveled to Paris sometime around 1890. He studied for three years at the Académie Julian with Jules Lefevbre and Jean-Paul Laurens, also working with Jean Joseph Benjamin-Constant. During his three years in Paris, Thorne's portrait clients were most often Americans living in France.

A young boy sees his father killed by a toy that was anonymously delivered to his house. After that, he is too traumatized to speak, and his mother must deal with both him and the loss of her husband. Meanwhile, a toy maker named Joe Peto builds some suspicious-looking toys, and a mysterious man creeps around both the toy store and the boy's house...but who is responsible for the killer toys?
