One can point out, of course, that the influence of religion is not always constructive. Throughout history, for some groups and individuals religion has provided the motivation for ethnic cleansing or terrorism. Religion, like all human social institutions, can be a force for good or evil. What we need to recognize is that religion is usually a powerful force and very often a force for basic morality and concern for the well-being of others. The fact that it can be a destructive force suggests that it is the job of religious leaders and all religious persons to distinguish the constructive from the destructive potential of religion and to channel their religious energies in constructive directions. The alternative of attempting to banish religion from human life is, in my opinion, not a viabile one.
