He was woken up when Clarissa came home, greeting him as she walked up to the house. He rubbed the sleep out of his eyes and tried to start a conversation with her.

Mama decided to rent out your old room to a young lady. Her name is Clarissa, she's very quiet, and very lovely. She gets on well with Willard but she seems to find me annoying.

Aunt Nora and Uncle Charlie seem to be doing alright. The company she works for is still afloat and Charlie and Dad get construction jobs every so often.

Willard started high school, but tried to drop out and join me at work. I told him there was no way I would let him do that and he's still somewhat bitter about it.

At the turn of the decade Elsie and James set off to Copperdale. The train ride was long but Elsie was bursting with excitement.

The day of Elsie and James' wedding, Elodie loaned her daughter a pearl necklace that belonged to her aunt Nora. She took one last moment with her daughter before she started a new life, and felt nothing but pride.

Elsie and James had a small wedding, with only close friends and family. The Calloway's came, as well as James' parents and siblings.

The children came home from school one day to find a somber scene. Elodie and Tommy were sitting in the living room, reading a newspaper.

They told the kids to sit down with them. The stock market had crashed, Tommy's construction jobs were dwindling, money was running low.

Willard didn't understand fully, and asked why his dad didn't just get another job. Jack told him to go upstairs and that he'd explain later. Elsie began to cry, wondering if she would be able to go to college.

A few weeks later an envelope addressed to Elsie came in the mail. She ran into the house and opened it with the family.
