Okay, I'm going to do this. Sloppily. But if anyone is mean to these guys in any way I am going to hunt you down, because they are awesome. Absolutely wonderful. But I remembered listening to this episode where they talked about Tune In back when I was sort of obsessed with the story of the early Beatles and loved/hated Lewisohn's book, and so I went back to see if the effect of Tune In on opinions of Paul McCartney were as marked as I remembered, and yeah. Even more. I could not clip anywhere near all of them, but I took a few.

You really should listen to this podcast in general. It's joyful and lovely. And do not blame them for the impact of the book. But that is the point. People who love The Beatles are completely charmed with Tune In, and because the book is so detailed and well-written, prose-wise, and Lewisohn is so revered, no one thinks to question the slant.

It's important to note that this episode aired in August of 2018—before "Get Back"—so for the hell of it, I'm going to add a clip or two of their Get Back episode after these just for the contrast. To see the difference in reading "the expert" who got his expertise from working for Paul and who Paul fired and doesn't seem to like much any more, and actually watching these people in real life. (Or as close as we're going to get.)

"I have so much affection for Paul, but reading this there was a bunch of times where I was like, 'What the fuck are you doing, Paul? Like, quit being such a jerk.'" You get a sense of Paul's "iciness." Paul's reaction to him mom dying compared to John's.

Fwiw, a reminder that Mark Lewisohn said he saw nothing new in "Get Back" and most definitely did not see anything like what he was seeing all over the internet that everyone else saw. (And he seemed very annoyed about all us hicks seeing what wasn't there.) But for these fans with a podcast, it basically flipped their impressions of the band formed from Tune In a full one-hundred eighty degrees.

Well, Jonny Look does it again.

By “it”, we mean make another absurd, whimsical, and funny music video. We first saw this when he did it marvelously with the Fruit Bats last year.

This time around, he took the brilliant Will Hines and had him try to eat a sandwich, which proves difficult for indie jazz artist Joe Russo’s PHÉR•BŎNEY LOVE THEME. We won’t say anymore lest we ruin the mysterious charm (though we’ll note choreography is wonderfully done by Erin S. Murray).

Damn, that happened quick… That’s the thing about TV-Relationships, they either must have constant friction, being pulled apart and then back together again like revolving magnets or they are teamed up and sent on private procedural like cases, or given tasks to overcome together. It’s the curse of the ill-fated tv love, and it breaks my heart. Even though it doesn’t get more ying and yang than Mikey (Mike Carlsen) and Titus Andromedon (Tituss Burgess), I guess with these two it was a little too much ying and yang. And ultimately, Titus is right, he does need to let Mikey kind of fly a bit now that he’s given him a set of wings, especially if they were going to be that exclusive. I have no idea why I’m dissecting their on-screen relationship so hard, perhaps it’s because I really didn’t see this coming, at least not this way. Honestly, I’m just glad that Miley wasn’t cheating, because with the all around upbeat rhythm of the show, acts as polarizing as infidelity need to be reserved for the villains. ‘Kimmy Schmidt’ is totally capable of going dark, but only if the right characters are involved.

Of course, there’s truly nothing that dark about the mutual ending of Titus and Mikey’s relationship. Titus works out his emotions the best way Titus knows how… Through performance art. This time a parody of Beyoncé’s 'Lemonade’, which actually takes up a good portion of the show. I know 'Lemonade’ was an HBO project, but I’ve never seen it, don’t want to see it, and even though this is as close I’ll ever get to seeing anything like it… I knew exactly what was happening as soon as Titus appeared in the all yellow, frilly, Quinceañera style dress he paraded through the street with… And you know what? This version is totally good enough for me, in the spirit of Glee with a Titus Twist! As usual, the songs were masterful and helped frame the episode’s narrative, which is largely Mikey & Titus, their relationship, it’s circular nature, and whoever this 'Jlrefff’ character is. 🤣 It’s funny how Burgess is so good at pulling stunts and gags that went along with the 'Lemonade Parody’ off so well… From the 'Episode 204’ comment, capturing and delivering the immediate pop culture reference to the audience (whether you’re familiar with Beyoncé or not, which I’m not, but got it instantaneously), to the genuine emotion he portrayed through comic motions. As great as Ellie Kemper is, Burgess might be the true breakout star from the show.

No disrespect to Kemper, she’s been basically an afterthought throughout the first two episodes of her own show, and I’m sure soon she’ll be handed the reigns, but that doesn’t mean she isn’t shining through these subplots. Daveed Diggs (who literally makes me jump with joy every time he’s on screen) plays Perry, a small time college campus guide who helps Kimmy believe that her possibilities are endless… And that just because a silly test tells her that she could be a crossing guard, doesn’t mean that she’s necessarily tied to that fate. Meanwhile Lillian (Carol Kane) uses Jacqueline (Jane Krakowski) to get votes in her district by heckling her at a charity function to help clean up the water that’s literally brown (and crunchy?), just so Lillian can stop the possibility of Gentrification in their neighborhood. I mentioned last episode that this would be a great chance for the show to take advantage of a serious issue, but they take a left instead of a right and Lillian learns that politics and winning don’t necessarily go hand in hand… Even if you win a seat to vote. Not exactly the lesson I was expecting the series to showcase, but it works nonetheless.

F*ck This Late Night Show, the late night talk show that has an enemy force actively trying to ruin the show, was so damn fun. 

They’re finally doing another version of it next week and you really ought to not miss it.

Pulling A Eugene Mirman
