General Austertlitz von Ravenmark holding Military Cadet Vincent Odinkirk's chin. The original cartoon, either by Bruno Paul or Eduard Thörny, seems to have less of a story behind it, but with it being over a century old I may not fully understand it, the chin-holding appears to be a patronizing, fatherly gesture. In my own interpretation, some liquor has been stolen from the officer's mess the night before, and since the scent can easily be masked with tobacco and cologne, and breathalyzers haven't been invented, closer inspection is required. Vincent turns out to be sober, just very tired.

An enjoyable aspect about writing a story set in Germany the 1900's is how they are decades ahead of the rest of the world socially and technologically. It's 1906 and there's public phone booths, electric cafes, mass literacy, working social justice programs like understanding dyslexics aren't stupid and people who get injured at work need compensation and enough money to continue to live in the same house and support their family. Meanwhile in Britain we wouldn't have these things until decades later.
