(wildsurmisemusic) The idea for this piece comes from physics (big surprise). I’ve had this thought in my head for a while now about what we do as composers. A composer creates musical order from chaos. A composer uses his/her faculties to take musical ideas and sculpt them in time. This is the complete opposite of what the universe tends to do. Our sense of time in the universe depends on an idea known as entropy. Entropy governs the way things in life move in time.  Why we grow old, why things decay.  What I find so remarkable about what we do as composers and as humans in general, is that we push against this entropy. We put order on things. We create meaning and structure. There is also this idea that this piece of music might outlast me. Some person 100-200 years from now might listen to this song. But even though we put order on things, everything does slide back into a higher entropic state eventually. One day the order that I’ve spent the last few weeks putting on this piece will simply fade away. But that’s ok. I know that these things I create are only temporary things. That makes them even sweeter and more valuable to my life. So with those lofty thoughts spirally around my head I wrote this piece.
