Film Review
Wild Indian is a crime drama that takes place in Wisconsin. It centers around the lives of Ted-O and Makwa. Ted-O (Chaske Spencer) and Makwa (Michael Greyeyes) are cousins who go to the same school and spend a lot of time together. Sadly, Makwa is abused at home and hides it from his school. Ted-O and Makwa spend a lot of time shooting. This a great escape for Makwa because he doesn’t have to face his abusive parents. We see Makwa’s mental state deteriorate throughout the film and he starts getting jealous of his classmate James. Ted-O and Makwa are out shooting and Makwa sees his classmate James. Makwa shoots and kills James. He convinces Ted-O to help cover it up. Their actions are never discovered. Years later Makwa has a family in California and Ted-O is just done serving 10 years in prison.
Ted-O and Makwa are polar opposites. Ted-O is a proud member of his tribe and even has the tribe’s name tattooed on his neck. The first thing he does when he gets out of prison is go to his sister’s house and meets his nephew. Makwa is not close to his family, which makes sense. It seems as if he doesn’t care about the family he has started and only cares about his work. Wild Indian does an exceptional job of showing how severely affected these Ted-O and Makwa are. Ted-O and Makwa completely change as characters. Ted-O is serving time while Makwa has a wife, child and a good job in California. Ted-O is affected so much by this traumatic event in his childhood that he can’t really function in society. Makwa is acting similar to a robot, he doesn’t really show any emotion. Ted-O is extremely emotional and is haunted by his past.
The two actors who played the main characters did a phenomenal job. Michael Greyeyes (Makwa) ranged from an unemotional robot to crying on the beach. Chaske Spencer (Ted-O) showed his skill in an emotional speech he gave. This film was director Lyle Mitchell Corbine Jr.’s debut film. Michael Greyeyes and Chaske Spencer gave emotional performances that supported the directors debut film. Wild Indian is a very strong film that sends a clear message. Makwa made a mistake as a kid and decided to live with it. Ted-O wanted freedom from his secret but knew what the repercussions would be.
This film was particularly close to me for a few reasons. The first of which is my Native American heritage. Having a Native American back-round is significant to my family and me. My tribe has always supported their people and made sure we have enough chances in life. Another reason why this film struck close to me was because Ted-O showed how important family is to him. I believe the sense of a tribe is why family is so significant to me. Seeing Native American actors on screen made me incredibly happy.
