Why am I giving over FlowersinUrbia to get out the #vote to #votethemout? About ten years ago, I started FlowersInUrbia to promote #freedom... Freedom to be exactly who you are, to move freely in our beautiful world, to pursue your dreams, to be safe and prosper ... to break through the fences and walls that are too often built to divide us and cage us. The blog was inspired by a half-fence made of prison-like bars built in front of my childrens' former elementary school. It was a country school, nestled on a mountainside in a fire prone area. Though we were far away from urban crime, the school district used the excuse of a sex offender who lived in our community to justify the fence, a fair enough reason, except that the fence did not fully enclose the schoolgrounds. Many of us suspected that the real reason was to stop parents from freely entering the campus, which for generations prior had been one of the defining aspects of the school's culture. I personally didn't like the idea of children growing up with prison bars before their eyes, nor did I like the possibility of a brushfire trapping the children inside the bars. However, because only a select group were permitted to vote, the fencers won. Every American citizen has the right to vote. How we vote is up to us. I don't know if I was right or wrong about that school fence, but I do know that not having a say was unacceptable, especially since public schools are taxpayer funded. Has there ever been a time in your life when your voice was silenced on a decision that had great meaning for you? Are you worried about voter suppression in the November 3rd, 2020 Presidential election?
