Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar
The nineteenth century was a time for social reform in India. Some historians have even named the period from 1830 to 1850 as the โAge of Reformโ. Various social reformers, in particular, played a major role in these changes. Key movements of the time fought for womenโs suffrage, limits on child labor, abolition, temperance, and prison reform.
All great souls are born to leave the effect of their good accomplishments on society. One such great personality was Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar, who was very humble, who spent his whole life with determination and purpose to accomplish certain objectives. He was a great social reformer, writer, teacher, and entrepreneur and worked continuously to change society. His contribution towards education and changing the status of women in India is remarkable which has been written in golden letters in history. Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar strongly opposed polygamy, child marriage in India and favored widow remarriage and women's education. Due to his contribution towards such issues, the Widow Remarriage Act was passed in 1856 which made the remarriage of widows legal.
Why social Change was priority for Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar?
Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar worked endlessly to provide equal education to all men and women irrespective of their caste, religion, and gender. He allowed people from lower castes in his Sanskrit college that were meant only for upper-caste men. During his lifetime, Vidyasagar had written many books Bengali education system to a great extent. Social change can be explained as to how human interactions, relationships, behavior patterns, and cultural norms change over time this is why social change is important. Without social change, we cannot improve or grow as a society.
He was admittedly a great personality and a reformer. Today, India needs dedicated, humble, and determined personalities who can bring all sorts of required reforms by working solely for the betterment of society, over and above their interest. In the honor of Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar Ji, the 'Metropolitan College' established by him in 1917 was renamed as 'Vidyasagar College'.
Along with this, Vidyasagar Setu was also built as a memorial in his memory.
