i think that the ambiguity of where lord summerisle stands when it comes to believing that sacrifice will bring back their apples adds to the horror of the wicker man, in that, at the end of the day, the final scene could simply be the product of a man desperate to maintain power, as opposed to looking out for the wellbeing of his people. i don't think anyone ever can or SHOULD be able to definitively say whether or not he wholeheartedly believes in their mod podge of paganism. HOWEVER. i've been thinking.

the people of summerisle, especially lord summerisle himself, had no ill will towards sergeant howie. they respected him in their own way, otherwise they wouldn't have sacrificed him. may morrison, with the absolute hardest line in anything ever, tells him that he'll "never understand the true nature of sacrifice," meaning that you have to sacrifice something that would truly be a loss to yourself or your community.

lord summerisle handpicked howie. when he said 'painstaking researches' he wasn't kidding!! in choosing a man perfect for sacrifice, he simultaneously chose a man that would be revered by the islanders, and a man intriguing enough that he, too, would feel the loss. when he tells howie it was a pleasure to chat with a christian copper, i don't think he was being facetious. there obviously was no shortage of blind allegiance among the islanders, so it must've been refreshing, to say the least.

my POINT being that, if lord summerisle didn't believe in the old gods, why would he have put himself through such genuine loss? was it fake it till you make it? did he go through the motions of drama and rituals to avoid thinking about the magnitude of what he was doing just to maintain power?? WHAT was going on in that man's mind. ever.
