Summary: Finding friends was hard. It felt impossible in the childhood of the D'Antonio heir and an assassin of Ruska Roma. Until after many years later, the friendship was formed between Santino and John. They became each other's first and only true best friends, each other's support and comfort, they shared similar interests, even discovering new things together. However, being so close and bonded resulted with more than friends feelings that they both will have to figure out together and with themselves.
One night changed everything, things started to feel different in a really good way that neither of them could've predicted.

Note: Hello! Here is friends to lovers with Santino and John! They're so adorable here. They're younger, Santino is 23 and John 25/26, something like that. I decided to go with that age gap for this fic. John liked to play video games, have book and comic collections, and when Santino met him, he started discovering things about himself, enjoying the same stuff John did. I think they didn't really have friends in their childhoods. Santino because he's born into a mafia, and I like to think he just didn't fit in because of that. Kinda the same for John since he was an awkward kid, quiet and just did what he was told (learning how to use weapons since he was a kid). So... they were both lonely. Growing up without friends. Until one day, they met each other and here they are ^^. They became each other's only and best friends only to become something else >:]. Bicurious John, closeted John but his brain exploded when he met Santino, as in, Santino was the most beautiful person he had ever seen and here they are. I think this could be a series and have multiple chapters! I don't know when I'll write more, it could take a while since I have so many more fic ideas. I put the tag with "&" as well since in this fic they're still more platonic than romantic but they're getting there, don't worry ;). But in future fics if I manage, we'll see how their relationship progresses!

Weeks would pass by painfully slowly for Santino. He constantly had things to study. His father, Giovanni, would always pressure him about learning about the Camorra and the High Table. He'd compare him to Gianna all the time, which would just discourage the younger D'Antonio even more. Gianna was older than him, appearing more mature than him as well, he wished father would look at him the same way he would look at her. But all he could do was try to pretend he cared about what he was being taught. Besides, it was getting really intense when he had to watch men getting beaten up by his father's people.
Santino liked art, mythology, history, he wanted to learn about those things. It was obvious he wasn't father's favorite, so why couldn't Giovanni just let him be? He was 23 after all. Then again, the answer was pretty obvious. Santino was still a D'Antonio, he had to know everything about the Camorra and the High Table just to not be a complete disappointment. His father wasn't young anymore either, the lung cancer diagnosis really worsened his behavior, so it was expected that he was going to teach his children everything important.
There was another thing Santino enjoyed. He enjoyed it very much. He actually had a friend who also liked his company as well. John Wick was his name. They met when John was having one of his training as an assassin and Santino was observing the process. John was the best out of his group, out of everyone actually, and that was something Santino admired a lot. The passion and sheer will John was showing was incredible. So he made the first approach, and they started talking. It was a bit awkward at first since John seemed like a quiet guy, but D'Antonio was working well with it. After a few months, they became close friends. And probably the only friends they have. John would often invite Santino over at his place to hang out, or go out somewhere and Santino would gladly accept when he could.
Sometimes it looked more like a date than a hangout, and a part of Santino actually liked that. John was attractive after all, he couldn't lie to himself. And he liked guys after all. It was something he had to hide from his father all his life, Giovanni couldn't know because it wouldn't end up good for him. He had only talked about that with Gianna who was supportive and would jokingly tease him, and eventually he talked about it with John, who was also supportive. Maybe he was worried about how he'd react, but it really didn't change anything about their friendship. John would still smile at him when he'd come over and listen to him.
It had been two weeks since they last saw each other due to Santino's studies being overwhelming and his father being even more pressuring, but finally Giovanni was going on a business trip. Which meant freedom for Santino.
“Hey, I'm free for a whole week, father is leaving for a business trip. Is your offer still up?”
Santino sent the message, hoping that John would reply fast. Sometimes he'd reply a bit later because of training or if he was taking a nap.
“Yeah, I was just about to ask. Of course it still is, I missed our hangouts and you know you're always welcomed here.”
John replied, and Santino couldn't help but to smile at the message. It was nice to be reminded that he was always welcomed at his place.
“You're smiling at your phone again,” Gianna teased playfully, passing by her brother, giving him a little smirk.
“Yes, because I finally get to escape from this place for a day,” Santino muttered, putting his phone into his pocket before Gianna threw more teasing words at him.
“What is his name again? John?” Gianna asked, putting on her lipstick.
“I already told you that so many times,” the younger D'Antonio sighed, rubbing his eyes closed.
“Cassian told me he knows him. He was a quiet guy, didn't talk unless spoken to,” Gianna said, checking her makeup in the mirror. “Sometimes a bit scary because of how good he was at his training. I didn't know you were into those types of guys.” But she still didn't stop with her teasing.
“We are just friends and you know that,” Santino snapped. “I like going to his place because we actually have a lot in common and I can finally relax somewhere.
“Oh, I'm sure you can relax with him,” Gianna chuckled, and Santino instantly regretted saying anything.
“Seriously…” Santino murmured, slightly blushing from embarrassment.
“Have you ever slept over?” She asked.
“No. Why?”
“Tonight you probably will. I have a friend coming over as well.” Of course she did, Santino wanted to just disappear at this point.
“I might never return,” he muttered as he walked away into his room. Now when he was thinking about it, a sleep over at John's place would be nice. It was a calm place, the atmosphere felt a lot better than at his own place. But then again, he felt embarrassed because of the whole situation.
“Is it okay if I stay over tonight? My sister is… annoying.”
He sent the message, feeling awkward but it was better to ask now and at least prepare John.
“Yeah sure. Don't worry about it.”
Said the reply from John.
Santino smiled again, he was excited about seeing his best friend. And maybe the sleep over was a good thing after all. Well, he wouldn't have to see Gianna and her friend Cassian. That always made him feel awkward even if Cassian was friendly with him. He would finally get to spend longer time with John, be near him, talk with him, listen to his voice. John's voice… It was really calming, so pleasant to listen to. It had a good impact on Santino, well, John overall had a good effect on him.
Santino packed a shirt and pants for sleeping into a small bag just for the necessary stuff. It was kinda like a bag for a speaker that he rarely used due to his father's strict orders, but it was useful for things like these. He was curious what they would do today, probably play that video game from last time, or talk about John's new book collection he started. Either way, he couldn't wait. He was wearing one of his favorite dark blue shirts with buttons, the top button unbuttoned on his collar. He really liked to dress that way, and John would often compliment him on his outfits. Santino knew how to dress for any occasion, even if it was just a hangout.
Thankfully, John's place wasn't far away from the D'Antonio mansion. Santino would always drive his cars a bit faster since there was no one on those roads. It was John's suggestion for letting out some steam. Driving around, especially at night, would help him calm his nerves.
“If your dad pisses you off and I'm not around, try going out for a drive. It helps me out, maybe it could help you out too.” Santino remembered the suggestion, and it became a part of his habit.
Finally, Santino arrived at John's place, parking in his yard, in front of the garage. He just got out of the car when John showed up at the door.
“Heard your car,” he greeted with a soft smile, standing by the door. “I'm glad to see you.”
“Glad to see you too.” Santino smiled and gave a nod, walking up to John.
“Not an Italian this time,” the other man commented, checking out Santino's car. He usually came with an Italian brand, but he had a few more that weren't, and John liked cars so he would always comment and check it out.
“You noticed, as usual,” D'Antonio said, feeling proud of the cars he owned. The only reason he was thankful for being born in this family. He loved his Italian cars, the Ferrari, Alfa Romeo, Lamborghini, Lancia, but he also had a lot of love for Mercedes, Porsche, Audi and similar. John, so far, admired any of his cars. This time it was a beautiful black Mercedes, it had the style that John really appreciated.
“You always drive Italian, this is a nice change,” John noted, giving a playful smirk as he glanced at the car a bit more.
“Thought I'd take this one for a drive today.” It had been a while anyway.
John hummed in agreement before he got his attention back to his companion.
“C’mon, let's get inside. The pizzas are still hot, they got here just a few minutes before you,” he said, patting Santino's shoulder to follow him inside.

Summary: Symbol of true love and respect. Giving these tiny flowers represents a promise that you will always remember them forever, keep them in your thoughts, as well as they are associated with faithfulness. It was exactly what John wanted for Santino. To protect the person he loved so much from all the danger that followed John. It was a curse, destroying everything in anyone's lives, and he didn't wish for that to happen to Santino. A painful decision had to be made that broke a part of Santino, which John never saw before.

Note: Hello! I present an emotionally heavy fic! This one is special to me in many ways. There's angst, the push and pull that Santino and John have in their own ways, two people who want to protect each other, but both of them have different ways of doing it. Also, one of inspirations was that scene in one of my favorite animes Beastars after Riz ambushed Legoshi and later Jack came to help Legoshi out and they had that emotional talk. This is mostly written from John's POV, how he sees Santino, his inner monolog, the paragraphs for that are written in italics. I like to think that John is an observant person, that he listens carefully and remembers everything, even the small details. He's the quiet listener. That is important to Santino, in my headcanon he wasn't really listened to in his childhood, he was a disappointment in his father's eyes so this detail was very important.
I also look at John as someone who was raised to feel like he destroys everything. Taught to be a weapon, rather than a person. And wherever he goes, death and pain follows. Santino taught him to feel like a human, like a person, they were learning together, and John just wants to protect him. His way of protecting means distancing himself so that Santino would be safe, while Santino wants to find a solution together. And it's heartbreaking for both of them. Santino in my opinion is a person who hides his emotions, who was taught to push it down, keep it all in. Until he just... broke down for the first time in forever. Sooo yeah! This is gonna be very painful for both of them.
Another hc I have for Santino specifically, he likes flowers! He was helping his mother with flowers in their garden when he was younger. He just doesn't want anyone to know about this except John. And I love the forget-me-not flowers ^^. Also, Caravaggio being one of his favorite artists! Yeah, Riccardo Scamarcio played Caravaggio, which was also an inspiration but I also think Santino really likes his art. He is fond of art, just like we saw in the John Wick 2, he said he sees little more than just paint on canvas. So, that goes for his love for Caravaggio's artwork, too! ^^
I was projecting myself a lot into John here, and Santino (well, it's always mostly him, it's John turn now hehe). And I think I'm happy how this fic turned out! I really enjoyed writing it ^^. I was worried I wouldn't be able to finish anything for this month since I was in a difficult and unexpected situation with a disgusting flood in my home, and that really hit me hard, it was a difficult few weeks. I was actually working on another omegaverse mpreg Santino fic, but I felt the need to switch to write this one. I think I made the right decision since I really felt this fic emotionally while writing it (I have tears in my eyes)! :']
Also, I'm thinking about one day to write another part, possibly Santino's POV. To see through his eyes and explore how their relationship was, how Santino looks at John ;).

Sometimes, all it would take was a small mistake, meeting the wrong person, finding yourself in a bad place at bad timing. Whether you were the assassin or not. It didn't matter. Not in this world. Someone was always above.
It was quiet once again, all John could hear was his own breathing and the crickets playing their night music. He could taste the blood in his mouth, smell it, feel the air blowing, leaves rustling. It was too quiet after hearing his own bones breaking. His body felt hot, but the air kept sending shivers through his body, the grass and pebbles under his body felt like they were piercing through his suit, into his skin. The blindfold was still on him, blocking the view, his hands tied together. His consciousness was coming back to him, the adrenaline slowly fading away, memory coming back and making him feel everything.
I knew it was going to happen. A warning.
John thought, slightly moving his head, which sent a sharp pain down his neck, making him groan weakly. Then again, the iron taste in his mouth was starting to make him feel nauseous, the nasty punch in his face had more impact than he felt. He managed to roll onto his side to spit out blood, though it made him cough out more blood. It took him a few seconds to realize that his nose was bleeding, dripping down to his lips, down his chin.
I feel like they broke every bone in me. It was a strong message… for both me and Santino. That I need to stop being his guard dog. But I'm just glad it was me and not him.
It was painful, his head felt like it was throbbing from being slammed into a wall to black out, but even after all that, he was glad it wasn't Santino who got hurt. He coughed out more blood before he turned on his back, exhaling through his mouth, but even breathing hurt, like thousands of little shards were stabbing his lungs.
Santino… I need to call him. I need to warn him.
He tried to move his hands, they were tied on the front, so he could still use them. He was tied just enough to be beaten up and knocked unconscious. John brought his hands to his blindfold, managing to lift it so he could finally see. The night sky looked beautiful than ever, the stars were bright, everything looked more alive. A buzzing noise interrupted his half conscious daydreaming, it was his phone in his pocket. He shakily reached for his pocket, still disoriented and hands tied, but he still managed to grab it. The screen was cracked, the caller's name was Santino and John desperately tried to click on the call button. He cursed at himself as the call stopped, the damn phone was too damaged on that side of the screen to pick up John's touch.
Fuck… no… I have to call him back. He's probably pissed off that I didn't answer.
Santino would get a bit snappy if John didn't answer him, especially after serious missions. John knew it was out of worry, something Santino struggled to admit, so he was showing it in his own way that John learned and accepted.
He pushed himself up, groaning from the pain shooting through his whole body. The tape around his wrists felt so tight, it started burning his skin as he tried to tear it off, twisting his wrist. It didn't work that well, so he used his teeth. Fuck, it hurt like hell, but he had to push through the pain. Blood stained the tape from his mouth, his jaw hurt from biting down, his whole face hurt, but the sheer will was stronger than the pain. He cut through the tape with his teeth, blood dripping down his mouth as the tape cut into his gums, triggering the injury he already had. The blood trailed down his hands as the remaining tape stayed on his wrist, but at least he wasn't tied anymore. He cursed again, spitting the blood to his side, breathing heavily, the dizziness made him pause for a moment to breathe through it.
His car. He looked over at it, parked on the side, untouched. Thankfully, it was still there, just like he left it and the little thing that meant so much was still inside.
Yeah. It was just a message for me. For now… it was just for me.
John tried to call Santino back, desperately pressing on the broken screen. It picked up his touch after a few attempts, he clicked on his name, then spent another couple of tries to get it to register his touch.
“C'mon…” He muttered, pressing again, but a blood speck that fell on the screen made him pause. Dammit, his nose kept bleeding, he wiped it off with his hand, tracing his fingers over his upper lip, his fingers came back covered in more blood. He couldn't lose his focus, he pressed a few more times on the screen and finally he managed to call Santino. He lifted the phone to his ear, hearing the first low beep that sounded longer than it usually was. It repeated again, just two times before Santino picked up.
“John! Where are you? I've looked everywhere, I sent Ares–”
His voice. I can hear it tremble even if he's trying so hard to sound pissed. He's worried. Worried for me.
“Hey… it's okay,” John interrupted him hoarsely, his voice quieter than usual. He cleared his throat and swallowed the blood that was mixed with saliva before he started talking again. “Something just… didn't go as planned.”
Santino was quiet on the other side, until he murmured curses in Italian, John could hear him walking, it went from the sound of the floor, to grass.
“Tell me where you are,” D'Antonio demanded, but John could tell he was trying to keep his voice controlled.
John exhaled slowly, closing his eyes briefly. He didn't even check if anyone was around. What if there was someone waiting for Santino to come and then get killed? What if they were watching him right now while he was on the phone with him? It wasn't safe.
“John,” Santino said sharply, it was a warning and it snapped John out of his worries. “Tell me right now because if I have to search deeper, people won't survive it.”
I know you're angry. I know you'll kill people. But I don't want to lose you.
John stood up with a grunt of effort, taking a first step which hurt a lot. He looked around, no one was outside at this hour, the bakery that held special memories with him and Santino was closed. The flagpole hardware nearby kept clattering against the metal from the wind, which John didn't even register at first.
“I… I can't–”
I can't risk your life for mine.
“I know where you are,” Santino cut him off, sounding more calm, like he was thinking. He was walking again, the sound of his footsteps on the gravel, until there was the sound of the car's door opening and closing. “And you better stay there. You sound like you're going to pass out.”
Of course, he was stubborn, but John loved that side of him.
“Santino…” John got interrupted with his own cough, blood splattering onto the grass as he coughed to the side. “Bring someone with you… it's too dangerous like this.”
Please, listen to me… I can't protect you from this distance.
There was the car’s engine noise, Santino cursing in Italian. “Just stay where you are. Don't move. You hear me?”
Dammit, Santino…
“Answer me,” Santino repeated more gently.
There was a beat of silence, John tightened his free hand into a fist, nails digging into his skin, his knuckles hurting from squeezing so hard.
“Yeah.” That was all John said. He knew he couldn't talk Santino out of this, he recognized that persistence and when Santino was like that, there was no way of stopping him.
“I'll be right there,” D'Antonio said before he hung up.

I posted my first fic and my first Santino D'Antonio x John Wick fic on ao3 on 31st August 2023, and after 2, soon to be 3 years of writing for this ship, I'm happy to say that with 34 fics with them, I have the most fics with them! I am THE Santino x John writer on ao3!!
AFTER 2 YEARS OF HARD WORK I DID IT!
I wrote those 34 fics even while going through so much in my life. And I went through a lot, so many unexpected things, I was worried I'd quit writing at some point, I was very close to doing so, but I snapped myself back from that and told myself I'll continue because I love Santino and John, and I won't let anyone take that dedication and love away from me.
My love for this ship started all the way back while I was in middle school, I think I was 7th grade? I'm not sure. Either way a lot younger than now. And they followed me all the way through the last years of middle school, through the whole 4 years of high school and now I'm a second year of college. So yeah, they've been with me for a very long time, probably 8 or 9 years. I really got attached to them and especially Santino, he became my favorite character as in THE favorite character. I love putting these two into different scenarios, AUs and anything I think of. I like to think I'm creative X). Also, all this time I've been writing on my phone! I find it easier for myself to write on my phone, also I can write anywhere lol, I used to write when I was college as well, that was fun.
It's been a long journey of reaching this goal. There's been happy moments and sad moments that will forever stick with me. I hope it'll eventually be more happy moments! I hope to get better at writing overall, I think I can do better, there's always room for improvement.
I also know I write things that is not to everyone's taste. That's okay, we are all different. I really don't mind as long as people are kind and respectful towards me. I really wanna continue writing them and improving my writing overall. I have so many ideas for these two!
So yes, this is a big deal to me. I'm honored. I'm so happy I did this, I love these two so much, they've been a big part of my life, through the worst and best moments in my life. They're my comfort characters, I know it sounds weird considering who they are, but it's just like thst for me :P. I will also try to draw more, draw them.
I write Santino x John because I love them. I know that ship isn't popular anymore and it gets discouraging seeing so little kudos and bot/scammers comments. But I keep writing for Santino and John because I love them and I want to continue doing something I love for the characters I love despite the low interaction. These two have a special place in my heart and I'm so glad I was able to create things for them.
