I fell down some stairs. It’s nothing, I just tripped earlier. Training accident, no big deal.
The excuses rose to his mind, but he didn’t voice any of them- he felt bad lying to Wanda- and he was pretty sure she’d know if he did. So Billy just looked down at his hands, covered in little scrapes and bruises, and sighed.
“I got into a fight.”
Wanda exhaled. She had more or less known what Billy’s answer was going to be before he spoke, but hearing it aloud did little to assuage her concern. She considered talking about being careful, or something to that effect, but she already knew that would be pointless, not to mention hypocritical considering her own line of work.
What she did do was tenderly reach down, taking Billy’s hand in her own and running her other palm over it, the cuts on Billy’s hand all but disappearing as she did so. “...And was this a fight that you started?” she asked gently, meeting Billy’s eyes as she let go of his hand.

Edie made an indignant noise but didn’t push him off. “Bil-ly.” She huffed, grinning a little. “I’m okay. Got my new set this week,” she said, pushing back her unruly ginger hair to show the purple hearing aids in her ears. “They’re not quite broken in but they’re lighter than my old ones.”
