So, I've seen the phrase "gifted child burnout" a few times on tumblr, and I was wondering if you know what that means... ? (is it ok to ask stuff like this here? I'm sorry if this isn't the kind of ask for this blog, I just wanted to talk again but I couldn't think of any other subject I was comfortable discussing and after two previous drafts I settled on something simple; let me know if its ok to just talk-but-not-vent here) -Whiskers
Whiskers!!!! Hello again!
Firstly, yes this is a definitely okay ask, it's actually a very good question and relates to mental health so heck yea! Good ask! Honestly I'm okay with ppl asking pretty much anything, this is a blog for openness and honesty and talking about stuff we're not comfortable talking about irl, especially mental health stuff. (Plus I get super excited to receive asks so ask away y'all)
Anyway, to answer your actual question. "Gifted child burnout". Well, burnout is when you're super duper stressed and overworked and it leads to physical, mental, and emotional exhaustion. And "gifted child burnout" is a special case of burnout that happens to Gifted Kids TM as a result of the extreme pressure they're under from others, or from themselves, to constantly achieve perfect grades.
As a former "Gifted Kid" who's currently a mentally unstable uni student, I've been through "gifted child burnout" once or twice in my time. This was generally as a result of the pressure I placed on myself to get perfect grades and to do everything I could to reach my potential. I spent an unhealthy amount of time studying, and would end up under so much stress that on several occasions, I broke down and cried and still carried on doing revision or homework. Whilst crying. My anxiety grew to an unmanageable level, and my mental health started freefalling. That's pretty much what burnout does to you, it eats away at your mental health until you inevitably collapse under the pressure.
The best way to deal with burnout is to take a break and look after yourself. Seriously, it won't get better until you take the time to recover, and your health is far far more important than whatever is pushing you towards a mental breakdown. Look after yourselves, be kind to yourselves, and take breaks as often as you need to.
Anyway, hope that answered your question, sorry for kinda rambling.
I love you guys, stay safe out there xx
